This talk grew massively when they were passed by as a venue for the 66 world cup in favour of Roker and Boro. That stunted their ego for a good while…I remember my school days taking the piss out of them for ages!!
From what I understand Vic the Freeman own the Town Moor and any development would have to go via them though not sure if this cover Leezers Park. Either way they have a lot of hurdles to jump before any spade goes into the ground. Not like any Saudi development in their own country. The South (not North!) and East Stand extensions at the SOL will be a breeze in contrast.
Cheers for that marra, are the “freeman” organisation linked to the council or a complete different body
They're linked but independent ... a Freeman can be on the council but not vice versa unless approved. In essence, no matter who is on, or runs, the council they have no jurisdiction over the Freemen. However the Freemen have no say in other council matters.
Thanks again, last question marra, are the Freeman body elected or hereditary,in other words can they be easily persuaded in sensitive cases
There are Freeman in my village who own land on the outskirts - My mate is one. It’s usually passed down to children. I’d imagine similar to Newcastle
Yes, you're right, it's hereditary and they're quite fanatical. If it came to a fist fight I'd say the Freemen would wipe the floor with the Council.
No bother mate, the majority of Mags have no idea that they don't own SJP ... ... I regularly see them saying they can sell SJP for building and make a packet. It would cost millions to knock it down and return the land to the Freemen.
In a nutshell you can own the pigs who snuffle for food on the village green ... ... though you can't stop the pigs playing cricket. But you can make burgers of them at the end of season BBQ
It's a bit of both. There's honorary freemen, (like when someone is given the freedom of a city), but there's also hereditary freeman. Hereditary freemen have certain "rights", generally people say they have the right to graze cattle or sheep on land in the city/town/borough, but it also carries responsibilities for other things. In medieval times until the last couple of hundred years Freemen were very influential in local civic affairs. In some ways they were as powerful and influential as the local land owners/lord of the manor and could represent ordinary people. Last week was the Lord Mayor of London's parade, in the parade there were loads of liveries and guilds, most of those would be/ were Freemen. Some of the guilds/liveries have hereditary Freemen status. What rights they have they take very seriously, mostly about preserving traditions and contributing positively to local civic life. If the Freemen of Newcastle are anything like other Freemen associations in other towns and cities (and they probably are), they'll take there responsibilities seriously but by not needing to be elected (unlike councillors) they don't need to court popularity. So they can refuse to build on Leazes Park, even if the Geordie press disagree.
, that’s what is really good and helpful on this board, you can tell some people are very good and educated, and doesn’t matter what the subject, there will be someone with a educated and knowledgeable opinion, personally think the board is under appreciated for valuable information at times
aye, plus it would have to be 'made good' so they could not simply leave a barren square or a lump of rubble...i see a bit of land at forth banks has been mentioned for a new build, guess we will soon know if the saudi's are sticking around and willing to spend one massive amount of money.
