Whether it was right or wrong, a rumour I heard at the time it's that Shearer had it written into his contact that he had to be the highest paid player there. So any time anyone got a pay rise that went past his pay, he got one too.
I heard that too but wasn’t sure it was gospel. Of course they will strenuously deny it if it is pointed out to them!

I heard it at the time. I think it was to do with either Man U signing someone that Blackburn thought was signing for them or Man U signing a player from Blackburn after unsettling them. Add in a long standing hatred from Blackburn (and Jack Walker especially) towards Man U and you can see how they'd refuse to sell him to Man U.
Also easy to see how they'd twist it into "I've wanted to play for them my whole life. I've lived the dream and realise how lucky I've been." Stands to reason. Who'd want FA cup medals, League cup winner medals, European cup medals and Premier League winner medals when you can have a statue that looks like a novelty condom
