I've harboured your concerns for many years especially during the Keegan title-throwing years. But we've always managed to give people the hope that we could 'push on' in a Leicester kind of way. That's over now tbh. We may well get back to the PL but the big clubs, unless they leave, have things tied up. Newcastle may buy a trophy or two and, in the eyes of a 10 year old, that's all that counts. The fact that the owners are barbarian murderers will be of zero significance. I've stopped thinking about it all and content myself that we're a decent club with decent supporters. I'll go to Wembley for the weekend, if we're there for the play-off final, and have a great time as I always do. The supporters are what makes a club imo and ours are now better than Newcastle's. They can dance around in their tea towels, waving Saudi flags, and they'll look exactly what they are.
Thanks marra, great feelings in your post as ever and it's swayed me away from not going to Wembley if we progress through the playoffs. Hhhaaawwwwaaaaayyyyyyy the lads
the mags have basically been like 'wayne and waynetta' (harry enfield for those who do not know) in their early days to when they won the lottery...they think they are now better than they were whereas in reality they are exactly the same but after many years of keeping quiet and having no banter they can now shout 'loadsamoney' (another enfield reference) and that is it. i have more respect and feel we have more in common with the likes of southampton and wolves than we will ever now have with the mags or the rest of the 'buy trophies brigade'... we are who we are and we are where we are and if by some chance a cup win or promotions come along we will enjoy them a hell of a lot more than if we had paid for it.
The Mags wanted Ashley to spend more so they could win things. He bought Almiron and Joe who really aren't value for money. They've now bought Wood who's the same. I'm sure they'll continue to buy in the same way Everton have but it may not work. I certainly wouldn't want Howe doing the buying. The difference now is that they believe they'll win trophies, the title the CL ... ... if they don't they'll be worse off than they were because now people hate them. It could be a very hollow victory.
for all his faults, ashley is no mug and knew that just throwing money at a problem does not fix it...he did a lot more for them than most will ever accept. fact: there are now more teams trying to buy success so there is far less chance of 'being a top team and winning things', there are fewer players to be bought to fill the places in those teams and those that are willing to move only want to go to a 'guaranteed' champions league club, for all man utd have had a dire season (for them) they will still have more pull than most due to their history and worldwide fanbase, liverpool can claim the same, man city have taken a good while to build up thier product but are now seen as 'regulars'. as you correctly mention, everton have been spending big to go backwards (and they are not the only ones, they just tend to get highlighted more at present) and i honestly do not think howe has spent well, he may do better in the summer unless they get a DoF in by then but they do not come with any guarantees either...i have said the same all along, this has as much chance of going wrong (probably more, actually) than it has of going the way they all expect/crave.
is it just because it is the mags.... i watched some of the match tonight (v wolves) and i watched what has been a very decent wolves side give the ball away time after time then the mags get a free kick that never was and it from there (eventually) they got the ball into the box, two wolves defenders somehow contrived to completely miss the ball leaving woods, who was on the deck, to kick it into the net...i switched over in disgust and did not find out till half time that it had been disallowed. the next 'major' point in the game came when woods was played through with a very good ball, saw the keeper coming and just made sure he got his foot to the ball then dragged his other foot into the keepers arm and rolled over a few times, the replays showed he had lost control of the ball and that he initiated the contact by dragging his foot along the ground, almost identical to the situation a couple of weeks back with liverpool where VAR and the ref overturned the penalty call...another stroke of luck (or three) for a mags side that really did not look good but wolves were worse. it does seem that almost every team saves it's worst performance for when they play the mags, or is it just my bias?
They are ALL like this. I work with loads of them, they are talking about winning the Premier, Champions League etc. I do like to point out that it is only 4 years until 100 years since they last won the league, and that Everton have spent an absolute fortune in the last few years and are currently fighting a relegation battle.
This is very true about people hating them now. My circles are less expansive than once they were, but I still see and and am in contact with quite a few people from around England and Scotland. I have never been one to bring the topic up, preferring it to emerge. But now it's there front , right, left and centre. All the time. They all seem to loathe them in a way I find almost wierd. I just ignore them now, and don't count them as a proper football club, just as I don't count City or PSG. But that lot seem to be more hated than either of those two, and I don't see it getting less so.
I work from home for a multi nationwide company and nobody likes the scum, more so the hierarchy nobody wants people like that in football except nufc fans
The real test will come when the mags try and sign the "next level" players - anyone can throw money at Burnley, Brighton, Villa and hoover up their better players by paying £10m over the odds but can they start rivalling City, Liverpool and Chelsea for signings? Your reference to Everton is a relevant one - they have spent hundreds of millions on players but are no better off. When Man City became rich they were able to bring in Robinho, Tevez, Aguero & Silva ahead of the other top teams in the division. You only improve by bringing in the best talent, not by filling your squad with decent pros My mag-supporting mates are convinced they will be the next Man City but I am highly sceptical - I just do not see Newcastle ever being able to attract the top names that get you into the top4 or 5 of the PL. Sure they have money (or at least their owners are super rich) but when is enough money enough? Just because City "only" have $4Bn compared to PIF's supposed $300Bn doesn't they can't or won't compete with the top names. The mags may well offer £200m for Haaland, but it doesn't mean he'd ever consider joining them
I'm in an office full of Newcastle supporters. Town daft they are/were. Most within the bracket of what you would call the older generation. Spent all of my working life here, since late 90's, my eye muscles are strained from all of the eye rolling that they have had to endure over the years. First half of a Monday morning was football talk, guaranteed, with strategically placed smatterings throughout the week. I cringed at their highs, sniggered like Muttley at their lows. Since the takeover they rarely talk about Newcastle now. When they do it lasts a minute or two, consisting of one sentence questions with one word answers. The conversation is forced, like their passion has suffered, like they feel a little sheepish or even dirty talking about it. I get the impression that they have placed themselves within their minority of those who believe that they have in fact 'not getting their club back?' I miss it and dont miss it in equal measures. Shame really.
Sounds to me that my feelings on the once great rivalry being over isn't just on the red and white side
Interesting that. My mate won't go back there after this season's commitments to his nephew and grandson are over. He sees what some of these people must see, what any thinking person can see, that the club is no more. There is a team there, but it doesn't play for the area, or the fans. It plays for the gratification and honour of Bin Salman. I would rather watch flower arranging.
There was a guy on the radio last night who was a little less optimistic. Literally said the only way they’ll get to that level is by actually buying all of the best players from City and Liverpool. John Anderson said he went out Sunday night to watch the golf and the lads in the out were talking about buying the best in the world. 7 or 8 new players at £100m each or so. Completely deluded. Even Anderson said it. He said it’ll be 4-5 years before they see anything which is a massive improvement. Thing is, the fans won’t accept that slow progress and will probably hound them out for not buying success quicker!! In all honesty our hope is probably more realistic that their expectations!
Exactly this! If they do it right, then they have a chance, but even with massive investment they will always lose out to the top clubs for the top players due to geography and history. Honestly, there is more chance of Chris Rock and Will Smith getting married than there is of the mags genuinely competing with anyone in the top 6. Now, that's not to say they can't compete with the rest, and with the right manager, some shrewd signings and a decent amount of luck, they could be a semi-permanent fixture in the 6-9th places in the PL with a shot at the cups. Try telling that to the deluded ones who think Haaland, Mbappe and van Dijk are itching to sign in the summer
