Contracts nowadys mean nothing other then preventing a player to leave for free. I know the blame needs to be shared, but if he does feel like the rest of the team has let him down, I can understand. We've all had times, under certain circumstances, where we've had to suffer due to other people's downfalls because we were on the same team and they couldn't quite cut it. i.e. at work. I'm sure the Gomes blunders weren't quickly forgotten by his teammates.
Thor, you're reading for too much into one article. It wasn't long ago 'Arry spoke of wanting 2-3 players "top players" for the side to compete with the CL 4 next season. I really don't believe we've changed this summer's transfer policy over the weekend because of Modric, infact I don't see a difference in what 'Arry said before, compared to what the article says today.
Arry singled out Modric staying as a reason to buy new players just recently SF,I wasn't aware he had stated it earlier. Anyway it looks like he's staying now. So Shelf, are you saying then that if we don't make the CL next time then it's ok for Modric to leave even though he tried again? You'd be happy with the attempt.
Which is surely where you'd be looking to management to sort out the personnel and rectify the situation, i.e. buy NEW STRIKER
I wasn't speaking about his reference to Modric, just that he has already said they're trying to bring in 2-3 top players so I don't see any change in our transfer stance. I also haven't seen Redknapp say that we're bringing in players to keep Modric, only that we will bring in players so we can compete with the best teams in the league.
Not sure if you mis-read what I said, but my post was meant to appear as the very least he can do is stay on and help to achieve qualification.
SF,take a look in the gossip column in BBC sport football, you know the old 606,it's there. He will buy 1 or 2 big names just to keep Modric. No Shelf I didn't misread it. What I'm asking is would you be happy if he left after trying to help us back into the CL but failed?
Quotes from the Metro article: ‘We have to show him our ambition,’ Redknapp said. ‘If we can add one or two top players to our squad there’s no reason we can’t have another great season and Tottenham could be a great club for him stay at for the next few years. ‘He wants to win the league and play in the Champions League – [Spurs] want that as well.’ I don't see where we've said that we'll buy players to keep Luka happy. The number of top players we've looking to bring in hasn't changed, our ambition to get back in the CL hasn't changed, nothing has changed.
SF,it also states "To keep the Croatian" Anyway let's not labour the point, maybe I've misunderstood it. Nothing Shelf, but for me if he tries again and we fail then I would understand his desire to play at the top. I wouldn't be happy but I would understand it. Besides I think we have a good chance of winning the Europa. I'd prefer to look at the positive side of what we are in rather than the negative side of what we are not. If we can match in the Europa what we did in the CL we will do very well regardless. Cheers lads,no offence meant ok.
Sorry to disagree with those who think otherwise. IMO, Modric is entitled to look to Spurs to show their ambition. A lot of talking has been done by both Levy, and Harry about "their ambitions" for the club. Regaining CL football etc. Modric is now wanting to see some proof of that. Whether you like it, or not, Modric has had his head turned. As harry has pointed out, the Chavs are far from the only "big club" interested. He would certainly more than double his wages, be playing in the CL etc. If you have any ambition at all, yourself, as a player. Why wouldn't you be interested? It's simple. If we want to keep him, we now have to back up all the talk, with some action.
Mighty thor it's just afeeling i have, what with keep changing managers,an ageing team, with Lampard and Terry past there best,i simply feel their best days are behind them
I'd just like to say...I did not start this thread as the front page says. SSS, Colonel - any idea how this has happened??? ...just wondered.
Moved: Modric not married or on honeymoon. http://sg.news.yahoo.com/luka-modric-vanja-modric-marry-church-lady-lourdes-181102746.html Clearly, Modric has not had the Church wedding with... Gooner in peace!! As an arsenal fan i'd hate to see you sell modric to chelsea or united - but i think that at some point it will happen. Its up to Harry and Levy to get the best possible deal for your club - £30 million plus a player or two?? Maybe? I'm just not convinced that players like essein/drogba/Kalou etc would join tottenham as they would be losing out on CL football the exact reason that Modric wants to (possibly) leave. However, I do take the point that you dont wanna sell your best players as you want to build a team around them - and by selling your best players you:- 1. make your rivals stronger and 2. make your own squad that little bit weaker. And i also get the point that the players harry is trying to recruit will look at the modric situation and see if the club has the ambition too take that next step and selling modric would possibly send out the wrong message to potential new recruits However i will say this when arsenal sold Anelka - we used that money to buy Henry - and we improved - you used the Berbatov money and invested in players like Modric/Bale/VDV etc and made your club stronger and you have enjoyed success over the last 2 years due to the improvements you made. The worse situation you want to be in is come august 31st you sell modric and dont have the time to find a suitable replacement - if the player (and i'm aware as of yet any move is speculation) does wish to move you would be better off selling him (maybe abroad) and using that money to reinvest in your squad and keep making the strides you have made in the last 2 years. Just my opinion - for what its worth...
if we did have to sell him(i really hope we don't)i think and hope it would be abroad,so it does'nt make our pl opponents stronger, and to stick two fingers up at them
http://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/2896...am-ready-to-offer-luka-modric-75000-a-week-as Tottenham are ready to smash their wage structure and hand Luka Modric a new contract worth £75,000-a-week once the Croatian midfielder commits his immediate future to the club, Goal.com can reveal. Modric is expected to issue a statement this week in which he will attempt to take the sting out of comments published on Saturday in which he declared his ambition to leave Spurs this summer, with London rivals Chelsea his preferred destination. Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has been in touch with Modric's agent, Mario Mamic, who has indicated that the 25-year-old is ready to accept the club's decision not to sell him following the Spurs chief's strongly-worded statement on Saturday. Modric has said he will not hand in an official transfer request and Spurs officials believe Chelsea 'got to him' prior to giving the interviews. Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has suggested that the Stamford Bridge club had been in contact for a number of weeks, while there is suspicion over the role of super-agent Kia Joorabchian, who is not Modric's representative. While Levy and Redknapp are understood to have been hurt by Modric's declaration of his desire to leave, they understand that his £45,000-a-week salary, agreed when he signed a six-year contract last summer, undervalues him in the current market. Spurs' tight wage structure means Levy cannot offer Modric the £130,000 weekly wage he could pick up at Chelsea, but he is ready to offer £75,000-a-week to make the former Dinamo Zagreb man the highest paid player at White Hart Lane. Levy is wary of appearing to reward Modric for his public outburst but believes it is imperative to keep the player happy as Spurs target a top four finish next season. Redknapp rates Modric as the best player in his squad and believes an improved salary will settle the player down, with club sources insisting they have no concerns about any negative influence in the dressing room. In his statement, Modric will insist he is happy at Spurs and clarify that he does not have his heart set on a move to Chelsea, who had an opening £22 million bid rejected last week and are yet to return with a second offer since Levy's statement. The playmaker's camp are keen to build bridges with Levy, Redknapp and Tottenham fans, many of whom feel let down by a player who has become idolised at the club since his £16.5m switch in 2008.Levy's categorical insistence that Modric will not be sold "at any price" reflects the resolve to hold on to Modric that has put off Manchester United, who were ready to rival Chelsea for the Croatian's signature but are now focussing on targets they perceive as more attainable. Tottenham gave a clear indication that they expect Modric to stay as he featured heavily in the club's publicity to launch next season's strips and club sources are adamant his situation will not mirror the saga that eventually saw Dimitar Berbatov join Manchester United for £30.75m on the last day of the 2008 summer transfer window. Spurs expect Modric to remain in north London for at least one more season, and he will be told that he can leave next summer, with the club's blessing, should Redknapp's side miss out on the Champions League places.
