'kinell talk about living in the past ! I have seen YES live several times - and I hate them with a passion. Music for technical abilities sake. Music is about the emotion it stirs up in the soul and should be judged by the ears. Yes - and other prog rock bands forgot about all that and decided that writing music in obscure time signatures with long self indulgent solo's makes for better music. It doesn't. Music is about the soul. It's about joy. It's about spirituality. Yes et al are proof that greatly technical musicians don't necessarily make great music. When music is written in odd time signatures, it doesn't really sound odd. When I listen to a song like 'Changes' by Yes, it sounds like it was written in 4/4 and then they decided to lose a few notes to make it harder to play (and listen to). I studied music in college for 4 years and have played in bands for 25 years and nothing makes me want to stop listening more than self indulgence.

agree with Stereo on overly technical music but maybe because I'm a ****e guitarist despite 20 years of axe wielding...

Blimey I was in the Chinese opp Tescos on Sun night! You should have said I'd have stood you (and the wife) a Tsingtao
That post is rather self indulgent. Everone's different. If you think a song like "Awaken" doesn't stir the emotions then that's the way you feel. Others don't. Just ike this forum. Everyone is different. I like loads of stuff from Stevie Wonder to Prince to Prog to Muse or even House - yes House! So uplifting when you're down or when you want to pump some iron at the gym. Howls of protest from the rock fans I know but who cares? Each to their own.
Anyone remember seeing this lot? Have to say Man sounded even better in the 70s - before I stopped smoking I saw both many times, including the Top Rank … those were the days Best band ever seen? Can't split Queen and Muse
Queen You just cant beat them for entertainment, Some of the lyrics were naff but they could make it work. Freddie was one talented musician. Meatloaf is another but he did use the tricks of the trade on his albums as if you hear him live its not the same, still good all the same.
Gawd, it's all kicked off in here Can't argue with that, maybe I'm just more diplomatic Music is one of those subjects that's so intensely personal and emotive. There's no right or wrong (unless that tit Simon Cowell's involved). Well I'm not commuting to Swansea unless it's a free bar.
Saw this guy many, many moons ago in the Grand Theatre, absolutely brilliant. This is the best Carpenter's cover ever...
OMG from the sublime to..... I agree though, music is the most subjective thing isn't it, and there's no right or wrong. Like you daimun I really hate the manufactured pop though with Cowell's grubby little hands over it. Nothing wrong with good pop music but there's an overbearing cloud of cynicism when it comes to creating 'bands' (they're not bands really are they) just to make money off them. **** me I spotted a One Erection perfume the other day. Tsingtao is very nice by the way.
Can I play the harlot? (Years ago even before Man formed I was in a RE lesson in school - one of the very few i remember - we were reading Deuteronomy and the phrase, 'and the men of her city shall stone her to death because she has committed an act of folly in Israel by playing the harlot in her father's house' The teacher ask who could define the word 'harlot' (my eyes went straight to the ceiling) but my mate put his hand up and in all innocence said, 'Is it like a mandolin?' I still have the marks from when I fell off my chair. Still known as Mandy locally, my friend became a fairly senior police officer in the MET (where stoning for playing a 'mandolin' was one of his greatest achievements. Harsh) For ages after that if anyone asked if I would like to learn to play an instrument in school the answer was always harlot related. (Detention was so much fun.)
I just cannot fathom the adoration that surrounds him. It cracks me up when they go to him (usually last) for his verdict on the latest wannabe - big pause, hushed silence - it's a yes from Simon!!! Wow!!! Wannabe starts blubbing, approval from God! Cheesy grin from God and a wink. Inane screaming from crowd. Am I getting too cynical? Two votes for Tsingtao!
For the uninitiated. Forget everything you knew or thought you knew about Prince. Yes, he's weird but bloody hell what a musician. This is at Manchester very recently with his (mostly) all girl band 3rd Eye Girl. For Prince fans you've never heard 'Let's Go Crazy' done like this. Fab. But that's my opinion. Still bemused about the new afro tho.
Dragonborn Thanks - my kind of guitar rock. That's the best I've heard from Prince ever. (Saw him late 90s when he was so far up himself he seemed to forget there was an audience.) Afro was to pay homage to Jimmy Hendrix. You're right about his musicianship though. For me he's a bit scatter gun - records in volume but doesn't 'craft' enough of his output - some things hit the target but a lot doesn't. Some songs are genius though.
He is a fantastic musician no doubt - I quite enjoyed that version. For me though, the point I was trying to convey is that for me - it's not about musicianship - it's about the emotion created by a group of musicians. I prefer stuff with rough edges more than note perfect stuff. When I think of how good the musicianship is on a Simply Red album - they are all amazing session musicians, but for me it leaves me feeling void of any raw emotion as it's the audio equivalent of a perfectly white wall - it's perfect etc but also very uninteresting. If the paint had started peeling there's more to look at. One of the best concerts I've been at was Arcade Fire - it was just one of the most spiritual experiences I've ever had. The look on everyones faces, every person singing in unison with the band. It just blew me away. Yet none of these musicians are gonna end up on the cover of Modern Drummer or Guitarist monthly etc because there's nothing technically amazing about their individual parts, it's all about the song as a collective - and they make one hell of a sound. They are headlining one of the nights at Glastonbury this year. To borrow a famous quote : "Simplicity is Genius"
