We didn't "manage" it, we were allowed it. It was a classic example of dominating possession without establishing any sort of control of the game. This will have set the pattern for much of the league, so we have to hope that DF has an answer.

Have to disagree lisbon -- not about Leitner, but about Rupp. We'd have been out of the game at half time if it hadn't been for him. And he troubled Shea more than any other player managed in the first half with his Tettey-style shots.

Just from watching the highlights, three bad plays led to two of their goals. Mario failed to connect with a clearance then ran into to their player to give the penalty. The third was Zimm not getting good connection to knock the ball out of the box. I expect pro players to make both of those clearances.

I wouldn't read too much into this game. Too many players missing. C'est la vie. It really starts next week.

Agree with that. While I'm disappointed with the result, I'll wait for a few league games before drawing any tentative conclusions. The loss of Klose (who could hardly be blamed for the three goals as he was off before they happened) was a blow, as we had no replacement. With less than half of our squad available today, it was hardly indicative of how we'll do this season.

Another negative post by the eternal optimist. :emoticon-0100-smile. plus ça change ! Personally I am prepared to wait for 6 to 8 league games before drawing any conclusions.

I like how we were all optimistic at the start of the game and now doooomed after one game where we had so many players out. I would have liked us to win, but hopefully the players coming back in will help us next week. There are so many games crammed in this year we need to get some momentum.

Any news when fans will be allowed back into the stadiums?

With 7 players playing their first competitive game for City and Josh Martin making his first start, yesterday's game was hardly going to offer a reliable indication of how our season will go. Only a few of those will be considered for a start at Huddersfield. Our potential is far greater than that shown yesterday.

EDIT: In his player ratings Paddy gives every player a 6 except for Dowell (7), Martin (7) and Mumba (8).

I agree with Superman here. It's not about a Haribo cup loss, it's about carrying this poxy losing mentality on into a new season and the risk of the new recruits being swept up or hampered by it. We so needed to win yesterday to lay last season's ghosts to rest

I think we all wanted that, but again 7 of the players yesterday weren't involved in the previous games and Martin only had a few cameos. Let's stop dwelling on the past and consider the new season a fresh start. The new players surely deserve that.

Before I sit through the whole match again on iFollow, here's a question for those who watched yesterday. The team was set up in the familiar 4:2:3:1, but did anyone notice any novel tactical or other departures from what we have become familiar with over the past couple of years (apart, that is, from the new players)?

We took a short corner kick and nearly made something from it by passing the ball around the "D" to the right side. I was happy to see that because we always kick the ball into the box and don't get anything.

    Paddy's take on Luton:

"Six debutants, young Dan Barden in goal and four U23 prospects on the bench. Only a fool would read too much into this display and result."

He also singles out Dowell for praise:

"The 22-year-old specialises in shots from the edge of the box and that will be a welcome addition to City’s arsenal but will he get a central role? Much like Buendia or Todd Cantwell, Dowell wanted to move into the middle and dictate play, linking well with Josh Martin. He also showed he’s strong on the ball and willing to battle - and looks sure to start at Huddersfield."

Let’s only hope that when we play Luton away in the Championship that we give them a good stuffing. That may go some way to atoning for the EFL Cup defeat.

I don't really care about the League cup , it's only use is to give fringe players game time, we have quite a big squad and many of those will be thinking about going on loan now .
I didn't see the game but going by the commentary we were pretty poor for most of the game and deserved to lose.

This season is all about getting back to the Premier league and getting the 12 losses streak out of our system .

We have looked very poor in all of our competitive fixtures after the restart other than flashes against Man United and we need to get a win in the next 3 games or Farke will lose alot of the faith and patience shown to him.

Huddersfield showed last season how difficult it can be for a relegated side in the Championship and just survived , we need to start winning away as it only happened one time last season and we need to try and get back to the spirit of 2 seasons ago .
    With a much improved squad.

Agree with that. Farke doesn't have long for me, either.

The league cup means a lot if we are 11th in the Premier League and in the last eight. Otherwise, can't get too excited... Particularly when we play effectively a third-string against a club in the same league - this is not a Luton Town in the Conference like that shameful match in 2013 and we have no divine right to beat them even with a first team.
