Considering it's Mike Ashley they'll be particularly salty!

Er but I'm not even sure he is buying a good 5m player. The worry would be if he spends 20m as bad as he spends 5m. As I say there have been exceptions but generally the players he has bought haven't really been "good" 5m players.

If we go off time here it's big money spent on Gayle who was our top scorer last season. Ritchie-assists alone speak for themselves. Murphy ok but the general consensus is he thought he had more to play about with, then add there's time for him to come good. Lejuene looks like a 10m CB.
It's pretty frigging hard to get a 'good' 5m buy these days so don't think it's fair comparison, especially on the wages we're prepared to pay. Not sure I could list one example from the prem this season.
Course his transfer record is full of flaws but we could pull up similar from Fergie or Wenger

As I say I fully understand the limits of his budgets etc. You can be cuter though. Take Watford. Will Hughes was 8m. Ricarlison was 11m. Femenia was a free transfer. Zeegelar was 2.7m. Brighton Gros was 3m. Huddersfield Mooy 9m. Stoke Tymon was a free transfer. There have been decent loans at the likes of West Brom, Swansea etc. So there is value to be had. I realise all managers will have a lot of chuff in amongst the good ones. Its just Rafa's chuff to good ratio isn't the best <laugh>

Our scouting does seem to be utter gash. Has been for years and years. Can't even blame Carr now...

Watford's a great example. Whilst they want to keep Silva, the board have openly said that it's the structure around the club that contributes to success, not the single bloke picking the team. That's a very modern approach and is absolutely correct. Look at Arsenal, they have so much money yet are floundering because it all points to a single person. NUFC's problem is when we had the Head Coach role, we had absolutely fck all structure to make that work, we had none of the foundations for youth you see at Southampton or Everton, none of the scouting you see at Watford or Hudds. Seems to me that the most important role at a modern football club is that of the MD/CEO and the people he or she is surrounded by. We have Lee fcking Charnley, but what he's done is go back a step by shifting all power and responsiblity to Rafa. For a club with our massive limitations, that's probably the best we can hope for, but we need revamping from the ground up.

With investment, that's gonna take a loooooong time. Without it, we all need to find a bunch of new Gods to pray to.

The thing you need to know about Shaw is that he is a good player as long as he gets his quota of hugs from the manager. If he doesn't get comforted by the manager then he'll get his comfort from Burger King. The more you abuse him the larger he gets, which might be fun to watch but won't do your team any good.

Fair enough. Dross like Josse definitely wasn't Benitez's first choice mind. Realistically should have had both Abraham and Caballero which would have vastly improved this team. But apparently we can't afford a loan or 40k wages on a free transfer...

I do think signings like Lazaar last year was fleshing out the team in a panic as well, rightly or wrongly.
I'm sure he'll get plenty wrong as always like, but at the moment I'm blaming the constraints of the club over the manager as, this season especially, it's left us rushing around for 2nd/3rd/4th options whilst everyone else was securing their firsts.

This is the thing people are forgetting. It's not just that we are having to buy £5m forwards, it's that we won't compete on wages either so the 'good' £5m players are going elsewhere in many cases.

I agree there is an element of that too. However just on pure ratio alone, I don’t think you can completely absolve Benitez of blame. It’s not the first club he’s had this problem. He did try to replace Alonso with Gareth Barry and subsequently lost him due to trying to do so. He then bought Aquillani as a replacement. Look I’m not saying the guy is clueless in the market by any stretch, but I don’t buy this “it’s all someone else’s fault”. He has more clout and say than Pardew ever did but he doesn’t get that defence.

What I would say is he has done remarkably well this season with ****e players. Last year he had a really strong side for the division and I thought he was pretty poor. He got the job done in the end though. This year we’ve done ok. Everyone is raving about Huddersfield and Brighton but we are just another promoted side too shopping in the bargain basement. So he has done well to amass the points he has. My only real gripe this time round is his Joselu love in and stubbornness.

If you aren't sold by the transfer window, you could sell Yedlin and Clark, for what you paid for them, in about a second. Please do. Would love to see NUFC relegated, just so long as you don't take either of those two with you.

I see the threat of joining our shower of shiite has promptly spurred Luke Shaw on to a MoM performance tonights vs CSKA>

Sometimes it just feels absolutely everything even closely linked to the Toon turns against us.

This just sounds like in the summer when we tried to loan the likes of Shaw, Gibbs, Jenkinson, Wilshere(?), etc. because we had no money and the selling clubs only wanted to sell for decent money. It won't happen.

Mourinho doesn't trust him and even though he had a great game last night he was out of position and lost the ball shortly before we conceded.

I'd imagine he'll be available for loan at least, whether he goes to you guys is another question.

Yedlin would be easily replaceable and no great loss. The lad is quick and has a good attitude. After that there is not a great deal of substance to his game to be honest. Clark is steady enough but again wouldn't be overly difficult to replace. I doubt very much either will be sold. We will probably add a couple of cheap loan deals in the window and that is all that will happen. Maybe Mitrovic will demand to go as he probably feels he is getting a raw deal.

Thought I saw a rumour that he would be involved in a player plus cash deal for Danny Rose from Spurs. Short term loan till Summer might suit both him Utd and Ashley but I suspect there will be a number of interested clubs.
