What are people's opinion on Mr Rooney?

As far as I feel, I have to admit that the jury is out at the moment. We saw the best (a great goal cutting inside defenders) and the worse (stupid booking for dissent) of him today. I know many people will say that he is only young and is a diamond in the rough but considering he broke into the first team last season I don't think he has shown enough progression in terms of footballing ability or attitude / self control.

On his day he can be outstanding, a real game changer but too many times he seems to pass when he should hold / run with the ball and vica versa. He has a touch of the Adam Miller about him in that respect. But of course when he is bad he can be terrible and/or get himself sent off.

Is he anymore than an impact player at the club currently and can you see him making the step up to first team regular this season? Personally given the wealth of midfield players we currently have I would like to see him go out on loan just to get a little more first team experience before he takes the next step
 
I've probably voiced my opinion on Rooney quite a bit, I like him, I'm no tactician so I accept I can be wrong, however, he seems like a breath of fresh air when he comes on with his energy. I kept willing him to get in the box today, the one moment he does, he scores! Simply because no defender is going to touch him.

His main fault imo is he comes across as what I can best describe as petulant behaviour, probably a bit harsh, without sounding bullish, I feel like the lads (Frampton, Lawrence, Fuller) need to get hold of him and quiet him down. For example that yellow he picked up today, I think I saw Frampton having a word with him after, has he learnt nothing from the red.

BSG has probably summed up my opinion though, in two points, attitude / self control - there is a fine line, where you are prepared to put up with it and work with it, until you over step that mark, for now he's the correct side of it for me but treading dangerously close with a red and yellow in two games, not full one's at that!

Please see this as constructive criticism of the lad and nothing more.
 
yes he offers a bit of attacking flare and has a great shot but the rest of his game (espically today) was attrocious. maybe thats a bit strong but he amde silly passes that were easily cut out, tried to cut inside when the line was open, went looking for the ball rather than making runs down the wing where he was supposed to be meaning he got right on top of martin when he was looking for an out ball and then the booking for complaining about nothing.

the boy has potential but i think even diamond in the rough is a little kind atm.

dont get me wrong i really want him to do well but atm he does way too much bad stuff to outwiegh the good stuff he brings to the table, espically when you have the likes of jackman and soon prob weston sitting on the bench with him

I actually think that Rooney could play off Kedwell - if we had to go 442. The ' minutes ' they have been on the pitch at the same time has produced some of the more attacking football this season. Rooney would need to be closer to Kedwell instead of on the wing. Rooney does need to cut out the dissent - it's not as if the referee will ever change his mind about decisions and giving verbals will always lead to a booking ( especially if the player is shorter than the ref ). I expect that Rooney will be fined by the club for his dissent. The positives that he can provide just about justifies his inclusion in the side - as an impact substitute for the last 20-25 minutes.
 
He was a breath of fresh air when he came on and the catalyst to the victory, fantasic goal, superb pass to Oli which led to the second penalty and added vigour and energy to what had been a turgid perfomance. Being the type of player he is he will make mistakes but I would far rather have a player who wants the ball and is prepared to take a few risks than one who plays safe and hides away.
 
Ther game changed whe he came on along with Oli, yes he makes mistakes and needs to keep his mouth under control, but he made the difference for all his faults. Would we have won 3-0 today if he had not come on? I for one dont think so. Slightly off subject how much running did Kedwell do today? The man just runs his heart out. Rooney helped kedwell find some space. For me though Rooney is still an impact player, and today he did that!

just to put my view into perspective i think hes a good impact player yes but he could be much better if he worked on being an out and out winger just some of the time and his decision making
 
Think he is a very good young kid and this year will really be key for him. By the end of this season I feel we will know if Roo is going to be a Gills legend or sold in the summer. If we do loan him out (shouldn't in my opinion) but he will need to go somewhere good, not Braintree or some other poor team, we need him to go to a good conference team and get some game time.
However Roo today proved he is a valuable asset to team and long may it continue!
 
even though rooney needs to curb his temper or ambition to impress, he has a belief and positive feeling in himself and thats no bad thing.
i would not loan him out this season, he's had plenty of time out on loan over the last two years...now is his time to come good for us and i think he has it in him to reach a good level of football in the future.

i also think if he leaves us before he shows his true footballing side, it will comeback and haunt us as a club!

at the club he's played in a few different positions and needs to find his position now and push on!

There's a reason Rooney does not start games and you can see that it frustrates him. He probably does not understand why which ironically is probably why Hessy doesnt start him. He just needs to calm down and that will come with age
 
I cannot rate Rooney enough. From his celebration you can see he is passionate about the club and wants to be here. As for what people are saying about the booking, obviously I don't know where you all sit but I think everyones reaction to that decision would be the same. It was a joke. That said, he is a pro footballer and should know consequences to such reactions.

Had a chat with some of the fans around me and we all came to the same conclusion yesterday. He definitlely changed the game but could have been so much more effective off of the left flank. He had to cut in every time (minus the goal) and made it easy for the full back. The positions he got himself into and wanting for the ball were top notch. He needs to START a game, and with Whelps out I thought it was the perfect opportunity. We effectively played 5 centre mids in the first hour yesterday and were poor.
 
I know I'm pretty much a newbie on thie forum, and as such I realise my comments probably get judged more than others. Being female may not help my case either, but honestly, everytime I see Rooney take his warm-up top off I have to cringe (and not just because of the chest hair!)

I literally cannot stand the insistance with which Hess keeps putting him on (and at the expence of Spiller?!?). I think he's immature, he's hot-headed and he just doesn't seem to have a footballing brain or at least hasn't grown into it. I honestly saw him have a real strop when another player tackled him, pouting like a school girl.

I think part ofd the problem is that he was hailed as the 'next Jarvis' and that just hasn't happened but it's in his head that he deserves the kind of attention that is going to the likes of Jack Payne at the moment. Maybe I'm being harsh but I honesty think he adds almost nothing to the team, he gets into Martin's way, coming too close and demanding a pass when he should be drawing defenders away and making runs up the wing. On Saturday a lot of his passes were poor, misdirected or weak.

While I have to admit the goal was a stroke of brilliance. Otherwise I think his game was poor, especially considering it was Spiller who was taken off!

I think there is potential for improvement but at the moment, he's like a puffed up peacock who's a bit too big for his boots! I'd love to have him change my opinion over the next few games but I suspect it is not to be so.

LadyGillingham - in regards to your first paragraph, I hope to reassure you that you are entitled to your opinion and I'm sure many of the other members would agree with me that you certainly would not be judged on your gender, never even having given it a thought personally.

Sometimes it's difficult to tell in the virtual world if something is just said in humour, however, just to reassure you that your opinion along with the many others are valued on this site <ok>

First off, Welcome to Not606, everybody is friendly enough!
However I do not agree with your assessment of Rooney. He is hot headed and can be terrible but he brings that spark to the team. He is so dangerous when running at defenders (his goal this weekend), and can change a game is a second.
I agree that the 'next jarvis' tag has not helped him but I feel they are very different players, Jarvis is another level and possibly the best left mid in England at the moment (certainly top five!) whereas Roo is a player whos form is too erratic to reach the same level but can do that something amazing (Southampton goal) and turn the game.

Now a player like that in my opinion is a real asset to Gillingham football club! :wink:
 
Rooney is a real enigma. Coming on as sub he always has at least one serious attempt on goal yet if he starts a game he can be relied upon to be totally anonymous. He is clearly seriously stupid as evidenced by his sending off against Cheltenham (he got just what he deserved) and his bizarre behaviour on Saturday. After his ten minute booking it seemed inevitable that he would remove his shirt in the goal demonstration and achieve yet another red but he just managed to resist.
Undeniably he has some talent. He seems handicapped by his physique of short legs and strong torso and he certainly has a deficit of common sense. He has been around three seasons now so the excuse of being a youngster will not wash any more. His best hope is to make some impact coming on as sub against tired defenders and to earn a couple of starts before Christmas. These will be make or break and if he is unable to beat fresh defenders he will be on his way to Dover at the end of the season. He may make a success at the Gills but it may need a brain transplant to do it.
 
Rooney was complete dross on saturday and then scored an absolute cracker at the death. It's so easy to see how opinion is so divided about him. He also acts like a total ***** on the pitch as well. Probably best to name him as substitute and bring him on only when things need stirring up.
