Just thought I'd test the ground on this one. As you all know Luis Suarez has been suspended for 8 matches and fined 40,000 Pounds for apparently racially abusing Patrick Evra. There appears to be no evidence other than that Evra says that it was so, and that Suarez admits the fact. It appears also that Evra had also used abusive language containing reference to Suarez's Uruguayan origins - it also appears that Evra had on another occasion told a referee that he was only booking him because he was black. Bearing in mind that causing grievous bodily harm on a football pitch often only leads to a one or two match suspension is the punishment for Suarez justified - when there were no witnesses, or is it misplaced political correctness.

I think Suarez is the victim here ,its sheer idiocy , Evra has a serious chip on his shoulder to help get a fellow pro banned for so long is crazy! He should have to serve a ban the same length for bring the game into disrepute!
The FA has been waiting for a case that they could be seen to be doing something about racism and as usual they have cocked it up!

The principle behind the ban is fine with me. If people from parts of the world where these things are more acceptable want to earn their millions here, they should be expected to play by our rules and face our consequences.
That said, I think Suarez was the wrong person to use as a shock and awe case, given that the John Terry incident is a lot more clear cut. And they've painted themselves into a corner with such an unprecidented sentence. The facts of the case aren't going to change, so I don't see on what grounds they can reduce the sentence, and on what grounds they can give John Terry anything less than a ten match ban when they eventually investigate.

Absolutely ridiculous, it wasn't racial abuse and I'm sick of minorities playing the race card for positive discrimination. THe worst racists in the current world are the tribal prejudiced sections within African society. The worst racist in the world is Mugabe, racism is prejudice against race and it swings all ways not just whites but blacks hispanics chinese arabs indians all are guilty and the most guilty tend to be those who shout about it!

Whether he is 'innocent' or not..the FA were right to give him a punishment. As NNW says, if you play here, you play by our rules, regardless of how they compare to your own country. This is not about Evra, this is about Suarez. What has sickened me about the whole thing is how Liverpool have reacted. To belittle the FA, and their decision, and therefore, in turn, making light of the racism issue is completely wrong. Instead of the tee shirts they wore yesterday, they would have had far better PR if they'd worn "Liverpool doesn't tolerate racism" tee shirts. They have sent out a completely wrong message in my opinion, and i hope they get taken to task over it.
Unfortunately that is not necessarily true. Consider the 'tolerance' shown to those known to come here and preach religious intolerance for example - they may well be expected to play by our rules, but don't, and they may well have to face our consequences, but from where I'm sitting very little of that appears to happen. It's all very well having principles, but they need to be applied fairly and across the board - this case appears to me to be rather selective because of its high profile nature, and is probably more 'political' than anything else.
I agree with Norway that it's something that should be sorted out by themselves - if nothing else, footballers are notorious for their ability to ignore rules and the speed with which they resort to arguing with and abusing others. They should simply grow another layer of skin and get on with it - that's what they'd have to do if it happened in a park game.
As to John Terry, his well-documented past misdemeanours probably sway people to believe that yes, he is guilty and, as much as I dislike him (based only on his media profile
) I cant say that I've seen definitive proof of his guilt. I'm no lip reader, but what he is alleged to have said doesn't ring true with me. Whilst it appears to me that he certainly used the word 'black', I'm not so sure about the second word . Saddo that I am, I've stood in front of a mirror and repeated what he is alleged to have shouted, but my lips don't move the way his did. Maybe accent alters the movement 
Apart from that, a two second film can't possibly show the context of what was said anyway!
And one more thing, coz this subject does wind me up a bit so i won't dwell on it...having been the victim on occasion of racist abuse....there should be NO place in football for any form of racism. He is not a scapegoat. He has been found guilty of racism. Unacceptable references to race shouldn't be allowed, so well done the FA for making it clear that it won't be tolerated.
As critical as I am of the FA most of the time, even I don't think they can be blamed for failures in our police forces, immigration or justice systems.

It may not be racist in Uruguay, but it is here. Liverpool let down their player if they didn't explain to them what is, and what isn't acceptable to be said on a football pitch. You can't feel sorry for a club that have, over the last 24 hours, been seen to be supporting someone who has been found to be racist, whether he meant to be racist or not. You can't feel sorry for a club that doesn't take the racism issue seriously enough, and whose PR department have cocked up beyond belief. How can you feel sorry for a Manager who says he will back his player, despite the racism charges. I don't give a fig about Blatter in this case. The FA are right. Liverpool FC is wrong. Suarez was wrong to say what he said. And Terry will get the book thrown at him hopefully. There is no place for racism in football, whatever form it takes.

It's irrelevant and you're completely missing the point. A term of endearment isn't said to take the piss. He was saying it to wind Evra up. No, we don't stop Spanish speaking players playing, if they're willing to play by the rules of this country, and by the FA's non racist rules. They need to learn what those are, and their respective clubs should educate them. It's not political correctness at all, it's respect, a cause that should be close to everyone's heart. Like i said, this subject really winds me up, especially when people cannot see that even the smallest racist comment being condoned by a huge club like Liverpool is unacceptable. I'm out.

The fact is he wasn't being racist, the term used was not a racist term. Its unfortunate that the idiots at the FA don't speak any other language but money. Football is a game where a bit of banter adds to the sport, are we to stop crowds singing or lets make the whole stadium a silent zone like a library and whilst at it make it a non contact sport.... Terry is guilty Suarez was not, in fact I'd go as far as to say that the FA itself is being prejudiced by not seeking a proper external analysis of the situation and jumping in with its size 14 boots looking to make a name for itself playing the anti racist card but making sure its not shown to one of its own WASPs.
You're missing the point. It wasn't a racist comment, it's the ignorance of Evra and the FA that's being shown up here. Are we not allowed to wind our opponents up? The banter between the likes of Gazzer and Vinny and any set of forwards and backs is all part and parcel of the game and adds to the fun of playing from sunday football right through to international. I know as i have been there! At a TSD tournament i went too i was watching a fight (white guy vs black guy) and the white guy was beating the black guy easily. The black guy got kicked (perfectly legally) in the chest and went down pretending to be hurt. The Ref in the middle told the guy to get up and stop messing around. So the black guy turned and said, "is it cos im black!?!?!". It was laughable!!

Actually his (Suarez's) grandfather is coloured and so I do not think he is a racist - and the word Negroito is used, as Norway says, in a very different way to it's English equivalent. Also, the plain fact is that there where no witnesses other than the two players themselves which makes the whole thing very difficult - we don't know which of the two speaks better English (Evra has been here considerably longer than Suarez, and probably knew the legal implications better). I think that Suarez is being used here as a test case, and is being blown a little out of proportion. Players do try to rile each other up the whole time in top football matches, with it often starting in the tunnel before a ball has been kicked. I do find it a dangerous precedent that the principle 'He said that to me' can be used as evidence for a punishment that exceeds what could have been expected had he broken Evra's leg. Having said that, if I insulted a fellow worker by making reference to his ethnic origins then I would be rightly sacked.
