It is great when you go to somewhere like London to bump into someone who lives there and supports SAFC. I have a friend who is French and lives in Paris who supports SAFC. He is as much a fan as someone who lives in Sunderland

Good call Swanseamackem, nice post.

When I was a lad, I attending both Mackem & Mag home games for a few years, as I was totally obsessed with live football - something I totally miss now living in Hong Kong.
Great match on Tuesday (my Wednesday) despite the result....

All the best for Saturday lads...against our seconds

"end of the day if you loved our great club you would not move away, its sad but its a fact"

Chris, I was moved to Essex with my family when I was 14 (in '75). Massive fan, went to loads of games with my dad as a kid, still get up to SOL every year or two, see a few away games each year. As a 14 year old, should I have told my family I wouldn't go south so I could stay here to watch football?
You're such a twat!

Chris you're a moron. The other famous fan of both teams in the North East...? Sir Bobby Robson. Should any man have a bad word to say about him then they are a cretin and no more.

There's is nothing wrong with being proud of the area and taking in both team's games.

There is however something wrong in that head of yours. You're a disgrace, an utter disgrace.

I think it's worth reminding (certain) people that no matter how much we love our club it is just a game. Anyone sane is going to put their family first, if they're lucky enough to have one. If you're unlucky you'll have to put your job up there too!

Thanks NiallQuinnsDiscoPants,
For including me in the same sentence as the Great Sir Bobby and upgrading me to “famous fan” Status.....I’m humbled

My Grandfather (ex Pro for Huddersfield Town and Carlisle United, who was born in Sunderland) will be smiling in his grave.

I wouldn't necessarily say you're famous but in terms of pride in North East football I think a lot of people, including myself could learn from your open mindedness. Famous no, worthy of being mentioned in the same sentence as the great man, yes.

I note you live in Paderborn - I was there myself in Alanbrooke Barracks from 1979-82 when the 15/19 Hussars were there as well - that's the best part of 500 Geordies and Mackems who moved away from the NE for work ! I suppose in this prat Chris' eyes we were all somehow traitors for moving !!

Loved Paderborn btw !!

I would argue that fans who have moved away from the area, but still maintain an active interest in SAFC, such as going to away games/coming home when they can, posting on boards such as these, and generally still following the club, are more "loyal" then those who do still live in the area but only give their money to the pubs on matchdays, rather than buying a ticket.

i think people who live further away are more loyal if nothing else, it's much harder for them to see SAFC live, yet many make hundred mile round trips, spending hundreds of pounds to do so, when i was younger i used to live in germany every time we came back to sunderland i would try to get to a match, but it's difficult. Also when you live away (abroad) it's nigh on impossible to find our matches being shown, i went to florida the year before last and found a bar that catered to north east fans over any other when the football was on which i found truely remarkable, that someone who lives thousands of miles away would open a pub and make it like a mecca for florida based fans (me and our lasses dad asked in the hotel reception if they knew anywhere that may be showing the match, expecting wholeheartedly to miss it. Immediatly as soon as we said sunderland he pointed us to this bar)

I was born and bred in South Hylton. I am currently living in Washington Village. I have just had news that I am destined for Liverpool because of work.

I intend to bring up both my two young offspring as fanatical SAFC supporters especially my boy. I guess its going to be a challenge with the two Scouse teams on our doorstep.
