Nah, he didn't need to call it a "Christian country". That was idiotic. We're not predominantly Christian any more; they're a minority.

Not according to the 2011 Census:

"The number of residents who stated that their religion was Christian in 2011 was fewer than in 2001. The size of this group decreased 13 percentage points to 59 per cent (33.2 million) in 2011 from 72 per cent (37.3 million) in 2001."

Anyway, the accuracy of his statement doesn't matter in the context of the current situation, as it doesn't change the fact that it's justifiable to defend him against bigoted EDL-lovers

Well the EP is called 'Parasite' (another world exclusive there), so you could be Parasites?

    Kind of works really!

That's because many people say "Christian" even though they're not, because they (wrongly) see it as a culture thing, and don't see "none" as an option. Something crazy like 95% of Irish say they're Catholic, but you can safely bet most of them aren't actually religious.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_atheism#United_Kingdom

If you factor in the proportions of other religions in our population then it's pretty hard to imagine actual Christians are above 50%.

Perhaps, although it partly depends on whether you consider practising vs non-practising Christian. My point is, you shouldn't let one inaccurate statement in the past affect your decision to defend someone when defending them is justified, which in this case it is.

You assume his intentions are good, rather than just to pander to whoever's vote he's trying to win. He tried to win over the intolerant arseholes voting for UKIP with his "Christian country" speech and now he's trying to win over the Muslims. Can't have both, buddy.

What his intentions are or who he's pandering to isn't important though, it is the bigoted EDL lovers I have an issue with and their ignorance is not defensible, regardless of whether their 'trigger' was a bit of pandering or political opportunism or genuine.

Eurgh how awks. I met this girl on a dating site years ago, we got quite close online, chatting loads and so on, then in the last few years we spoke on and off. We'd talk for a few weeks, then I wouldn't hear from her for several months and then she'd text me and we'd talk for a few more weeks then go back to not hearing from her for months, and so on. Anyway, I'm doing my PGCE at the uni she goes to (the fact that she goes there wasn't a consideration when applying, and my first choice (Southampton) was full) so I texted her to let her know I was starting there in September. Partly because there was a faint possibility that being in the same geographical space may lead to something happening after all this time, and partly because I didn't want to just turn up unannounced in case she thought I was stalking her or something. So her reply was very.... final basically on the lines of "I hope you're well and I wish you the best for uni", so I just replied to say "Thanks, I hope you are too and I wish you all the best as well", which was pretty final on my part too as I took the hint of her wanting to end our on-again/off-again contact and hopefully conveys the fact that I have no intention of pursuing a relationship or even friendship with her. That ship, which set sail the first time she deleted me off facebook, has now struck one of those WW2 forts in the Solent and sunk. Anyhow, I feel very awkward now and in retrospect I should have said nothing and just hoped not to bump into her. I always make bad decisions :(

How is that awkward? It's an extremely clean way to end that.

I'd have said nothing myself but yeah you can't complain too much, that went fine.

Overthinking again, Pomps. You informed her you were coming to a Uni near her, she gave a polite reply, you gave a reply...all over now. Deleting you from FB was a clue. You tend to hang on when things are dead, but don't beat yourself up about it.

Well, she deleted me from Facebook. Then she added me again. Then she deleted me a second time.

But after the first time, I was 99% sure nothing would ever happen, which is why I was never remotely bothered about the long gaps in communication nor held on to the belief of anything happening even during those few weeks when we'd be talking (after a couple of times, I'd be thinking to myself "I wonder how long we'll chat this time")

But if you think the way it went was okay, then.... cool I guess.

Just stop thinking about it now. It's dead and analysing it over and over won't make it not dead.
