I would - and I'm completely neutral - I suspect there is an element of wishful thinking colouring your post ... I will be surprised if, with the creative / attacking talent of Rooney, Mata and Van Persie (not to mention the promise of Januzaj and maybe Zaha) and the inevitable clear-out and likely quality defensive additions in the summer, if United are not seriously challenging for a top four berth next season ...

... very true ... but they are 'Manchester United' and if the terms and conditions for prospective players are similar then the kudos of that 'brand' could well be a deciding factor ...

Whilst there is an element of wumming and gloating in your post (not surprising coming from a ******ed scousers fan who has never won a premiership title), I unlike the majority of fans here do think that could happen. I hope it doesn't but I have seen this happen in the past with United. When things go wrong, they go really badly wrong and spiral out of control for a few seasons.

The silver lining is that when they start getting it right they will be unstoppable. Not the type of Fergie hegemony over the premiership, which will never happen again in my lifetime but being constantly in the top 3. The pressure from their hundred millions of fans from all over the globe will ensure that this will happen sooner or later.

I do think the squad whilst containing good players with huge potential also needs adding to with top quality players. My criteria will be that in every key part of the field United should have a player who could challenge for a premiership XI. E.g a top striker, a top midfielder, a top defender (a top GK would be a bonus!). In all our years of domination, we have had at least one player in that select group. This year the fact that United not only did not have one single player in the season premiership XI but also not even the reserve XI shows how far we have fallen. We have already spent £65 million and we are far from achieving that.

And yes, there is a United style. and a United way of playing football. Once the players realised that Moyes was not aware of that, he was doomed. Fergie and B.Charlton realised that too in the last few weeks.

I can't see us finishing worse than 7th, as that would mean either a Southampton or a Newcastle would have to finish above us. I think 7th is as bad as it'll get next season, though I'm hopeful we can get back challenging for the title again, even as early as next season.

Maybe that's a little optimistic, but I do think with a few quality additions and a world class manager this squad has the foundations to challenge for the title again. You can't forget most of the current squad walked the league last season, so there is quality in the squad. We just need the right man to get the best out of them. Van Gaal will be able to do that I believe

With Liverpool in CL, and United playing part-time and not being managed Moyes by you should finish above them next season

Guaranteed more like going by how massive an advantage it supposedly is. I mean, you can be complete **** but as long as you don't have Europe you will do well, riiight.
I guess it must be a real mystery why all the CL spots are not filled with clubs who've had no European football this season. A real head scratcher

    Good point.

We would have won these tight matches against those teams around us and would probably have just scraped into CL <ok> i.e by not losing those points to the likes of Everton and Spurs.

were a cert for cl qualification next season. league will b tough but we will b up there challanging anyway of that i have no doubt. speaking from experience confidence is a huge factor when it comes to playing football, the players just never had it under moyes. itll b back next season and will only grow as the season goes on, as long as we dont have as horrid a start as this year.

Because it is psychological, after all when all said and done SAF is but a mere human. However, he had great power within his Manchester United reign and the trouble is with winning and power, human beings suddenly think they believe in mind they are invisible and are some great divine gift. That was proven in his own arrogance and recommendation of Moyes. That's why he never washed his own hands of this mess. It's like an F1 driving that goes on from glory to glory, taking all the risks, until a cruel twist of fate. So many humans at the top of their game think they are immortal. What i would question if SAF left such a great team, then the players themselves have lots of questions to answer. No manager destroys a team that quick in 10 months. I don't watch the Prem but i did see parts of your last two games, Everton and Bayern, to me as a neutral it looked liked Rooney couldn't be asked. SAF had held the reigns for so long, maybe the pampered players sulked because there god had left. Afterall to put in the worst season performance since whenever dosen't exactly bode well on any of their CV's, while yet fingers will always point at Moyes. The whole situation was nothing more than trial by TV. Like i said earlier SKY losing subscriptions and the modern game that can;t be allowed to happen, especially with BT breathing down their necks.
