While waiting for our decapitation tomorrow, can you think of the simplest and most direct way to stave off the sharpened blade and blunt the cutting edge even as it's hurtling towards our neck?

    Mine would be
We win our three games, which we must

Hull lose one and draw one of their remaining two games
(away to Tottenham and home to Man U)

    Newcastle lose to West Ham

    Job done

Is it possible, and is there an easier way?

We last beat them on 8.3.2000!!!
In one sense you may feel that the longer that run continues, the greater the chance that we'll beat them eventually but I rather fear it will not be tomorrow. Sorry not address your OP or maybe I have?

Just a bit of diversion before the almost inevitable.
I see the bookies are giving us a big vote of confidence, we're 1/1000 to be relegated...

Three successive wins or even two is something we haven't managed all season, therefore there is no reason to believe we are about to start now. Having said that, stranger things have happened.

True HE, I suppose what RTID said about beating ManC is the Matterhorn for us. If that happens, I know I know, then who knows?

Failure to win is no longer an option - we need 9 points to catch Newcastle and we have 3 matches left to do it. Even at that, it would come to goal diffential so it is very important that the match against NUFC next Saturday be a right hammering of the 3-0 or 4-1 nature. And should we prevail in those two (if Newcastle contnue to flounder as even a draw for them will do us) we still finsh up the road in Leicester so no cakewalk

I am one of the "it ain't over til it's over" types, but this is getting close.

I fear City will be busting a gut to win as Arsenal look good for 2nd place and if City were to finish 4th they'd have to go into the early season qualifier in the Champion's League. I really think we are on a hiding today, Aguero loves us...

Maple, the interesting thing about the scenario I outlined in the OP is that while the likelihood of us securing the results I put forward as the ones we need to ensure our survival are as remote as us finding life on another planet this very day, the only tiny consolation is that it doesn't matter if every one of those games are decided by only one goal, it would be enough. We don't need to concern ourselves with improving our GD, the stars have already aligned to relieve us of that burden.
