Matthew Craig's been out for four of the five weeks he's been at Mansfield ...though if Mansfield's coach could keep his story straight about what the injury is, that would help
I've been checking some research papers and it looks like the expected number of hamstring injuries for a team with our number of games this season is between 4 and 10. I don't know how to check how many we have actually had. That's based on data from two seasons back and another paper suggests that hamstring injuries are going up appreciably, season by season.
It seems to be more common amongst all teams, although maybe I’m just noticing them more. Same as ACL injuries, they seem to be on the rise too. I do think players are playing way too many games. Chelsea and City have the Club World Cup at the end of the season too.
Also has to be asked if VAR is playing a part Mickey Van did his hamstring against Chelsea last season because the dickhead ref was going to VAR for every minor decision, and the constant stop-start nature of the match had the side effect of having players alternate between standing still for 3-5 minutes to running full pelt, which any personal trainer will tell you is asking for something to go twang
Players are playing too many games because managers are ****ers and the authorities have removed friendlies. Far too many coaches are running individual players into the ground and simultaneously ignoring squad options. Then they've got to rely on rusty backup players when the starters inevitably get injured. Squads are massive now and the youth setups should be used to expand them even more. Teams can make five subs every game and they don't need to make three of them with two seconds left, either. There's no excuse for destroying players and that applies to calling them up for pointless Nations League crap, too. I think that the endless fake injuries in second halves is doing damage in a similar fashion. Timewasting to destroy momentum makes it all very choppy and extends the time on the pitch, too. They need to change the rules about injury treatment and substitutions.
