What did he say? Just got up but saw something on twitter about how he was actually earning 133k not 103.
From NUFC.com:
Reacting to Michael Owen's recent comments (see below), Newcastle United MD Derek Llambias said:
"Michael is the most expensive signing Newcastle ever made and I’m very disappointed. Under Kevin Keegan’s management he (Owen) was offered a one-year extension at £140,000 a week which he did not take. He was already on £133,000.
"Quite honestly, what did Newcastle United get out of it? His time here cost £40-odd million, about £1.3m per goal.”
That's all well and good and given his position, Llambias is entitled to have his say. However, that's another set of quotes regarding a former player, to go alongside his programme notes berating Newcastle fans for abusing former player Andy Carroll at Anfield in May.
However there are plenty of current affairs at Gallowgate that are surely worth going on the record about, be they Joey Barton's future or the compulsory movement of season ticket holders - rather than arguing over history.
Freddy Shepherd also had his say:
"We might have been a poor team but we made him a rich man. He spent more time ferrying between Cheshire and Tyneside in his £3.5m helicopter.
"It’s very disappointing to hear Michael Owen say that about Newcastle. There was nothing poor about what we paid him, more than £90,000 a week.
"Look at what it cost Newcastle. We paid £16million to Real Madrid for him and his wages over four years cost approximately £20m. Add on the bolt-ons such as National Insurance and Owen cost £40m over the four years he was there.
“It works out at around £500,000 for every game in a Newcastle shirt. Poor? Well, he wasn’t poorer for it."
Owen's Twitter account commented:
"Just to answer some of your tweets. Prefer playing less often in a top team than every game in a poor team. Been there and didn't enjoy it."
Assuming that he's not talking about Liverpool or Real Madrid, that leaves us - unless he means England....
Of the 148 Premier League games Newcastle played while Owen was contracted to us, he started 58.
