Suarez comes from Uruguay and they speak different Spanish called "Rio Platense" or "Español del Rio de la Plata". This dialect prefers the pronominal use of "vos" over the normal "tú". Suarez would never ever use the pronoun "tú". Second point: The verb "ser" is conjugated in neutral Spanish, Suarez would never have conjugated as "eres" but rather as "sos". That sentence would've never been uttered by a Rio Platense so that's where I get my doubts.
I would be more impressed by your answer if the FA report hadn't been compiled with the help of 2 expert witnesses one of whom was a specialist in vernacular South American Spanish of the region in question.
That's one of the pieces of evidence they used. If one of those so called "experts" failed to report the cultural and linguistic differences between a Spanish speaker of SA and an English speaker from France then all is lost.
"The experts who were instructed are Professor Peter Wade and Dr James Scorer who are both affiliated to the Centre for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at the University of Manchester. Peter Wade works in the Department of Social Anthropology and is a specialist in race and ethnicity in Latin America, with particular emphasis on black populations, genetics and sexuality; he has also worked on the ties between Colombian national identity, popular music and race. He learnt his Spanish mainly in Colombia, has been a fluent speaker for nearly 30 years, and has experience of Spanish usage mainly in Colombia, Mexico and Spain. James Scorer works in the Department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies. His research focuses on Latin American cities, particularly urban politics and cultures in Buenos Aires, as well as on national and regional identities in Latin American cinema, including that of Uruguay. He learnt his Spanish predominantly in Buenos Aires, and has been a fluent speaker of Castellano for nearly 10 years." If you take the trouble to read the report you'll find that the issue of 2 players with different linguistic backgrounds is dealt with at some length. The FA have I think actually done a very thorough job in this case - makes you wonder why they make such balls ups of other things - though I guess your explanation would probably have something to do with Man U !!
I've read tens of articles from an academic viewpoint and there are many inconsistencies with the FA's report. I am currently working on a paper regarding this subject for the Linguistics Journal of the PUCE (Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador) when it is finished I encourage you to read it. I assure you no mention of Man U will be included.
I look forward to receiving the link. Shame that the FA didn't call you as one of the expert witnesses, your knowledge is obviously greater than either of the people they did choose and would have been invaluable........
I can't make head nor tail of any of the above. I must be a bit thick. Thought the T shirts looked **** mind.
Whether in a racist manner or not is irrelevent. If you're in a foreign country and accidentally do something which causes offence you apologise and explain it that way, you don't say "well it isn't offensive where I come from so I haven't done anything wrong" and start slagging off the person you offended. You don't need any understanding of foreign customs to understand that. And before you suggest that maybe here we do that but in Uruguay they don't, Liverpool aren't a Uruguayan club so they should have advised him to issue the apology.
Liverpool reacted the way they did because Luis Suarez was dismissed as a racist, which he isn't. Suarez has since then apologized to whoever felt offended. by it. 8 matches for a cultural/linguistic difference is far too much. How many matches did Evra get?
I would be be interested in receiving a link to your paper. I accept that you know more than about the topic in question than I do, however the fact remains that the FA did not choose you as one of their expert witnesses, presumably there were reasons for that and they were unaware of your greater expertise/eminence in this field. And that is not sarcasm but a statement of fact. I think that you and I are going to have to just agree to differ on this one. UTT
We're just talking about this particular case, so I don't really get the purpose of your comment. I take it's personal dislike for Luis or you have a soft spot for Man United.
Considering the pair of them were almost coming to blows in the penalty box, during a Liverpool v Man United game, makes any suggestion that he wasn't meaning to be offensive is totally farcical.
if he'd apologised straight away, all this fuss wouldn't have happened. but nooooooo.... they had to drag it out and have a siege mentality.
sick and tired of hearing about this case. thank goodness that liverpool wont appeal and he can serve his ban now and the whole sorry subject can sink into the abyss.
It's gone on for far too long and SSN are milking it to the extreme.Every day since it happened they have churned out something or other on the matter. Suarez was out of order, he knows it and Liverpool know it. All this nonsense that he didn't know it was offensive is ridiculous in all honesty. There was no need to bring in Evra's ethnicity into the equation end of. Liverpool have made a song and dance about the whole situation and IMO have made a proper digs dinner of it. The longer this drags on the more foolish they look, Dalglish has not dealt with this at all well.
