A few minutes ago you called it as not a handball. Why are you attacking people for calling it as a handball by saying it couldn't be called in real time? You're raising an objection that could reasonably be raised against your assertion.

Have you ever noticed your unthinking support for every referee's decision ever made? Some of us have.

By the way, I should clarify that I think it was too tough to call. But I think that. I've considered it. I don't knee-jerk go with or against the referee. Your automatic assertions that the referee was always right is the cause of the anger you sometimes feel. Sometimes they do get it wrong. Admitting that once in a while doesn't contradict the Referee's Union rules, does it?

Not getting into the dispute as to whether or not it was a penalty, but no way could Madley have known, from his angle, if the ball had come off of Stephens' elbow or shoulder.

On the subject of Stephens, 3 incidents in the opening 7 minutes showed just how assured and comfortable he is becoming in that position/the team.

Firstly, when under pressure in the third minute, he just stopped the ball and took time to pick out a simple pass. This after no other Saints player could get the ball to stick.
Secondly, he gave the universal hand gesture to two teammates, telling them to communicate, after they had got in each other's way in the box.
Thirdly, he gave Cedric a right mouthful over something.
Despite the penalty, he was my motm.

Stephens was superb. Thought the pen decision was very harsh, but justice was done with Forster. Anyway, well done Jack, he is turning into a very good player.

I'm clearly not saying he is Ronaldo
please log in to view this image
, but the principal is exactly the same
He's not played in a major league before and I already see him improving his strength and fitness

Creative players don't just come out of the box, they need time, something that you clearly won't give him

Yes, we need video technology for incidents like that. But not for the reasons you state.

I'll tell you exactly what happened. The linesman didn't have time to get back in position. He was running back along the line. It's pretty hard to be running, looking to see if there might be contact, and see a person's hands fairly high up AND the ground at the same time.

I'm fairly certain the linesman would tell you that Mignolet blocked it with his hands. What he missed is where Mignolet was, because he wasn't looking. And I don't blame him. The linesman and probably everyone in the stadium was looking at the ball and/or players and not at the line. But HAD he looked at the line, it would have been obvious. He just wasn't looking. Linesman are human. They make mistakes. This was a mistake, but an easily understandable one.

But let's not pretend that play was close. It wasn't. If he had time to be where he was supposed to be, and was looking for handball outside the box, it was an easy call.

    No need. Here's the post.

Individual players were excellent, JWP in particular but Puel's an out-and-out twat for going for the draw rather than trying to win at Anfield. I still don't think it was handball anyway. But people saying that the referee should have spotted the "handball" have never refereed and therefore can have no clue about how difficult it was to spot (not that there was anything to spot IMO anyway).

Will this performance prove to those that criticise Puel, as not being tactically aware, that he actually is very tactically aware?

    Doubt it.

You can't possibly be saying that even with the benefit of slow-motion replay, you don't think that hit his hands, or that he is not outside the box? It's blatantly obvious.

It's also obvious in real-time, if you know what to look for. Mignolet was already outside the box while he was running sideways. Not just his body. You can see him plant his foot well past the line.

Depending on where you read it Southampton fought hard and won a point, or Liverpool were out of sorts, off form and lost two points. Milner missed a penalty (to miss it it has to be off target?) or Fraser Forster saved a penalty.

No way could the ref have seen that `handball` from where he was - he gave it because of the shouts fron the Liverpool players. Excellent point Saints - what really pissed me off was the commentary - all about what Liverpool were going to do, what subs they were going to make etc etc against one of the `lesser lights` in the league.

Are assistant referees allowed to make important decisions? They often seem to wait for the referee to make a decision then wave their flag.
