Can't believe that some people think that Allen played well. He should have had a hat trick in the first half and managed to lose the ball on the edge of the box with some consistency.
Honestly I thought he did ok. I know he missed a couple but he got in the positions to score them. He held the ball fairly well too
James Pearce ‏@JamesPearceEcho 1m President of olympiacos has just donated £100,000 to Steven Gerrard Foundation
Also sent this open letter. It's a nice touch Steven Gerrard is one of the finest footballers in the world, and it is fantastic to see today a club able to support a player with a testimonial after 15 years with them - but all the more so when the player is also able to play for his hometown team and achieve so much including becoming captain of club and country. I have been a lifelong Olympiacos fan, as was my father before me, so I know only too well the pride and special feeling of being able to be part of the team that brings success to the club you've supported all of your life. Steven may have selected Olympiacos for that special goal and all it meant to him and went on to mean, but I feel the clubs have a very special resonance and connection. Olympiacos are a side from the port city Piraeus - today part of the wider Athens - the fans are famous for being the best and most passionate in Greece, creating a fantastic atmosphere in our stadium. Without any question it is their passion and commitment that has so often been the extra player that has cheered on their team in red and white to being the most successful club in Greece, reaching our 40th league title this year. So it is perhaps easy to understand why Liverpool FC are very popular with many Olympiacos fans and why when I personally came to the UK to live for a while when I was younger and why I was so naturally drawn towards supporting Liverpool - as I still do today - as the connections and similarities are so clear and strong. The clubs have been further bonded by their respective tragedies. I know all Olympiacos fans feel huge unity with Liverpool fans in the campaign for justice for the 96 as we have suffered our gate 7 tragedy where 21 supporters lost their lives just over 30 years ago. We are equally delighted Steven has chosen to donate his proceeds from this match to the Steven Gerrard Foundation, a registered charity which helps disadvantaged children. This reinforces the feeling of common understanding as we will be donating our proceeds to similar charities in Greece to aid children who are in dire need of support today. So for so many reasons when we were asked to take part, it was a very easy and quick decision. We would like to offer our congratulations to Steven for a fantastic career so far and wish him a wonderful evening.
It is a shame Mellor retired through injury. It would have been nice to have another lovely cushioned header.
Just watched it, was worth stopping up for. First twenty minutes we were superb, good for all the game and great to carry on the scoring/clean sheets against decent CL opposition. I think Robbie needs to shred a few pounds I feel sorry for him though, a player of his quality doesn't deserve for his career to tail off the way it has. Wonder if that had any influence on Carra's and Owen's decisions?
Certainly not on Owens ,his career tailed off as soon as he left us and once he signed for the scum it was as good as over. I think it was hard for Robbie to be as motivated for any other club than Liverpool. He loved/ loves us,Owen just used us!
All true but Owen did go on the play for two of the biggest clubs around, plus Newcastle inbetween. He may as well retired before Stoke.
owen should have retired after newkie... he might be able to go more than sit in cold trafford as a barely acknowledged guest.
olympiakos were paid more than 100k to come i herard so thay gave a bit back.. .whatever.. they came thats the important thing and gave a decent game. we on the other hand looked ready for the off... much better standard to look at and our team looked like its getting there just nicely. thats important. the rest? nice day, emotional etc etc etc.
Who cares how many he should've scored? He was getting into the right positions to have a shot at goal, that's a skill in itself. Shankly's quote about Roger Hunt: "Yes Roger Hunt misses a few, but he gets in the right place to miss them" sums it up. If he wasn't getting into the right positions and wasn't trying to get into the box to score from an advanced role, that's when we should be worried. He's only young, he's got plenty of time to improve on his composure and finishing, those are things that can be improved on relatively easy. You can't improve much on game intelligence, you've either got the knack of getting in the right places or you haven't.
I wish people would get off Allens back. He came in last season and did ok before falling away. He obviously had a long term injury that was impacting on his game but he battled on when maybe he should have had it sorted out sooner but because of the injury to Lucas he had to,play on and in a position he's not used to. He has started the friendlies ok and has got forward a lot more. He didn't put away all his chances but then neither did Aspas and no one is criticising him (rightly so) so why expect Allen to do so.
I struggle to see where Allen can fit in this team, but Rodgers bought him so must know something we don't.
