Paul Machin on Redmen TV makes a good point re. the signing of Grealish, £100m for a player City didn't really need. Machin compares that spend against what we have spent recently......£36m for Konate (goalscorer v City), £47m or so for Diaz (ran them ragged all afternoon) and £20m or so for Thiago who controlled the midfield. A similar amount of £££ overall, but spent far better and more effectively by Klopp.
The difference is the "Home Grown Surcharge". Teams frequently (not always) have to over pay to get domestic trained talent. Not saying Graelish is worth it to get home grown status with, they still overpaid but that is probably part of the cost.
There's the city charge Then the England football charge And on then the homegrown charge. Chelsea have cottoned on finally. James, mount, christensen and Loftus cheek all qualify as club trained. This is why losing christensen on a free is annoying them but Gallagher and Gilmorton are to come. The others are just barkley who they no longer even want etc etc. In short there's zero need in chelsea's mind to hit the massively over priced English Market for declan rice as an example. City are nuts to have paid so much for grealish. It was nonsense given the proven value in the market.
