to be fair - value is determined by the selling club, and has more factors than just the player himself:

1) late in the transfer window - harder to get a replacement
2) geordie no. 9 - merchandise
3) the goals he will score - could mean the difference between survival and relegation
4) disrupting the squad - losing one key player can make others want to leave
5) keeping star players makes it easier to attract new players
6) attendances - selling carroll would significantly drop gates
