Happy with this policy tbh, it was the same last year with ilori. It seems that every summer we take a big punt on one unproven player (on an almost pure potential basis) up to about the £10mil mark, then send them on loan. Never gonna be worse than Bebe, is he
Well in the first year we punted on assaidi no? or was it borini... neither to my mind had any proving about them. Last year ilori and alberto are both big gambles and this year origi. I feel its a real mixed bag. we punted a lot relatively on yesil too. on the other hand the ibe, sterling, teixteria fees were tiny tiny fees. The trick is the right player rather than just cheap i suppose.
well assaidi we're about to sell for 3x what we paid for him and borini 1.5x (although that looks off the table now)
This smacks of a WC buy. I saw both his games at the WC and he looked lively and a decent young footballer, but his record does nothing to suggest there's a prolific striker in him. Time will tell, could be an astute purchase, could be a total dud.
rodger is so adamant that it is not a world cup buy that one feels he doth protest too much. I have seen it pointed out about rooney's record at the same age so records are records and looking at a player is far better... I'll reserve judgement as aside from a stilted belgium side who were so negative we've not seen the lad and if we consider djibril cisse and coming from france... well its a BIG step up to come here. sure it could be one way or the other but the thing is... he's a big unit so shifting him to some donkey ball prem side in two years should not be a problem if desired.
We were tracking him before the WC. We wouldn't have got him based on 4 bit part performances. I guess you think similar of your new signing? Martinez saw him at the WC and got him based on those 3 games for Bosnia... No prior scouring or anything?
yeah but we had to loan them out and they had to perform well for those fees to come to pass so there's an element of good fortune in that clubs stepped in for them. if stoke had not come for assaidi we'd never have got him a clu bthat would pay for him. e.g. voronin. 4 mil fee, sold for 2mil despite decent loan to hertha... if we loaned the guy to an english side it'd have been more. another example is alberto... if he plays really really well in spain the reality is he would still be sold but unless one of the top 6 in spain step in theres no way clubs can afford 7mil. another example is aspas..... I think my point is the right player... sterling, ibe, wisdom, teixteria and the list goes on are picked on real potential at young ages, Ilori is a punt of big money but then again you could say the same of atsu who we coudl have punte don a year earlier cheap Giventhe size and power of origi i do feel the 10mil fee has a strong chance of being recouped if the lad puts any effort in on loan. can is another punt but looks a bargain first team prospect based on release fee.
Wrong thread tobes, we aren't discussing Besic in here He looked better than Lukaku, who had one decent 10mins, at the WC.
Martinez claims to have been tracking him before the WC, but he's obliged to say that, same as Brent. He also said his performance against Messi convinced him he had to buy the lad.
well somethings got to tip the decision making. the thing is LFc were linked heavily to origi before WC started... (i think)
I brought up the Rooney comparison to answer a Man U wum, and because I was just intrigued how they compared. From what I saw of him at the WC he looked like he has potential (I'm not going to claim to have wathced all his games in France). He may obviously not fulfil that potential but I think he looks worth a punt.
Was drunk so probably a bit harsh on the lad. I didn't see him do much though, but I also didn't watch all the games. This transfer doesn't excite me but the lads young and played at a world cup.
