This. IIRC a performance related pay offer was what caused Rooney to spit his dummy out in October 2010, and our board backed down pretty quick once he made a transfer request cos City would offer him the money up front. Honestly, if Suarez' contract came up for renewal, your board offered him a performance related deal and he stuck in a transfer request cos other clubs would offer him money up front, would you be happy with the policy?
No we wouldn't be happy but there are already plenty of clubs right now who'll offer him more than we can if he even so much as hints at a move. I don't see why this policy would drive him away...he'd have earned more in goal bonuses this year than he gets as his normal wage so I think a guy like Suarez would just get more motivated by it.
I think it's more the implication of the policy. PRP has a very clear "We don't trust you to put all your effort in by yourself so need to use your salary to make sure you do". Also, the implication of changing the contracts is to save money, which implies the player has to accept a substantial cut in their basic pay to earn their bonuses. That'll be a hard sell to any player, particularly at a time when wages are just going up and up and up.
Not sure this is the implication. With Financial fair play rules its more like if you increase the revenue of the club by playing well (ie. a CL spot or a good cup run) you get a share of that increase. In other words it ensures players are invested in the clubs success and are rewarded when the clubs revenues increase, much like a normal business. Many clubs will be able to offer players more money than we can and if thats their main interest then we have to accept that and move on. LFC has a lot more to offer than just financial reward and that should be a factor with any player who wants to play for us.
Suarez was on a reasonable basic (I think he was on less than Cole, Carroll, Downing?) but after his performances in his 1.5 years, we gave him a much better contract - fully deserved. I think existing contracts won't be changed i.e. the basics will stay the same. PRP contracts will probably come into effect for the new signings.
