Yes, it's a pain but train tickets can be refunded can't they.

No not in most cases.

"What if you choose not to travel?
If you decide not to travel simply because you’ve changed your mind, you’re unlikely to get a full refund. However, depending on what kind of ticket you bought, you might be able to cancel and get most of your money back.

Sometimes you will be asked to pay a £10 cancellation fee to do this. And be warned, some advance tickets and special offers may be non-refundable, so check the terms and conditions of the train operating company.

You're more likely to get a full refund if the train you were intending to take is delayed, or your reservation is not available. In these cases, you can argue that the train company failed to deliver rather than that you changed your mind."

Depends
Cheaper ones can’t be

Happy to bow to experience but the 2 occasions I've been unable to travel for different reasons I got a refund on one (easily) and a rebooking for the other, which is what I wanted. This was with Trainline.

I've lost £10 on a couple of occasions through having to cancel because of fixture changes(I mainly use LNER,obviously that's for East Coast travel). It's not the end of the world losing £10,it's more the disappointment that the chance to meet up with friends/family members has been taken away.

I've had several FULL refunds over the last few years due to trains running over an hour late or not running at all. It's reasonable enough getting what you've paid refunded in full but the inconvenience of taking in excess of 8 hours to return home from Hull after a game far outweighs the money returned.

I just feel, perhaps selfishly, that accessible games from my neck of the woods are becoming a rarity these days and it pisses me off big time...Sunderland is a big game/good away day for us all.O.K,I can watch it from the comfort of my own home but that's really nowhere near the same.

Early 2000s I had a season ticket between Swindon and Central London. You get a refund on those based on the percentage of trains late and/or cancelled during the year regardless of whether you're on a particular train. One year I got a £7,500 refund the service had been that bad on GWR.

Hopefully we can do to QPR what we did to Rotherham but their form has improved last couple of games.

QPR 1 - 2 City

Cheapest ones are always non refundable and non exchangeable
Game changes force you to gamble or buy a more expensive one in the first place regardless of where you buy it from
