Hanging is a very emotive subject......Until you have experienced first hand the effects of a murder you have no Idea of the heart break, the devastation, the anger and the loss.
Then you are asked, should this person who supposedly carried out this dreadful act if they should be hung. The vast majority would say with out question yes!!
In reality though that would be vengefulness which of course it is not justice although it could be argued other wise. There is a wise old saying which for me holds strong....."Two wrongs do not make a right"
The only part of the current law I would like to see change is if a life sentence is given...it should mean exactly what it says.....for life!!

I can live with vengeance in the heat of the moment, but I cannot live with the idea of a government body cold-bloodedly organizing the death of a prisoner. However, full life imprisonment should be enforced in some cases.

The question really is should criminals be locked up to keep them away from mainstream society and punished with poor facilities, etc or should they be locked up and a rehabilitation program be put in place to help them see the error of there ways, learn new skills, etc to hopefully become a better member of society on parole.

I think we are trying the latter - rightly or wrongly.

In an ideal world, prison should reform prisoners, but. in the absence of an ideal world, I'll settle for keeping them off the streets.

Norway has a maximum sentence of 21 years, and the prisons are extremely cushy. They get TVs, they get to go out and play sports, etc., and they also have the lowest re-offending rate in Europe. They're reforming a greater proportion of their prisoners than any other European country. Something to think about.

So that meant that the bloke who went on a shooting rampage in Norway, killing god knows how many, is only in prison for 21 years. Fantastic. :headbang:

I think in his case, he has been certified as insane, so can be detained indefinitely.

I can't believe this thread is still going. Some people can't get enough misery can they?

Point of order: Anders Breivik was not certified insane, and has been given Norway's maximum custodial sentence which is 21 years.

Thanks for that, I was obviously misinformed. I wonder how they will rehabilitate him in that case?

Then Norway is stupid,,,no way that Breivik should ever be let out. Glad we have 'detention at the Queen's pleasure' here (unless Europe have their way). People say it's against human rights, but if you get to the position where a government misuses it you have a tyrannical government anyway. Common sense that some people can never be let out again.

We also keep paying whopping fines to Europe to prevent prisoners from voting here. They're keen on it but Cameron just keeps refusing.
