Isn't it saliva that blocks the airway?

I think that it is normally the tongue. Bear in mind that it is a relatively large muscle, and it is big enough to completely block your airway.

Also, an alternative angle from behind the goal.

Yeah I'd heard it's saliva, vomit etc more than it is the tongue. I'm not a medical expert by any means though.

You're also not supposed to put your hand in their mouth because you want it to be clamped shut. Looks like he actually got bitten during that. Recovery position should suffice.

Yeah that can happen too. For example, if you've had too much to drink and you pass out, you can vomit in your sleep and potentially choke to death on it. It happened to my flatmate in halls during first year, and he was saved by the fact it was a shared room. His roommate heard him choke and got him turned on his side etc. Very nasty incident, and thankfully he survived it.

The other time that I have seen it happen is when Antonio Puerta, a defender for Sevilla, collapsed back in 2006. They managed to save him then, but then he collapsed in the changing room afterwards and he unfortunately died. He was found to have a heart defect similar to Marc Vivien Foe, if I recall correctly.

    Interesting observation, that LTL.

I remember when Marco Simoncelli died a couple of years back, and young Tomasawa before him, it was very emotional because one knew these guys from interviews and their demeanour on and off the track. Bike racers tend to be big hearted people, and these two were no exception, especially Marco, as he was Italian and had the built-in romance of the bike racer. He was also Valentino's friend, which meant he was an automatic good guy. But he genuinely was anyway.

Yes, there is much greater emotional involvement there LTL, and it probably is the danger which cements the connection. I remember once exclaiming to the TV screen during the Catalunya 2009 MotoGP - the final incredible 4 laps between Vale and Jorge - for goodness sake guys, don't injure yourselves for my entertainment.
I suppose that was me getting involved.

Yeah, I think there might be something to that TSS. It was horrific when Marco died, such a great character.....

If that is real, that's going to result in some epic environmental issues as Earth's population skyrockets.

Colonising space suddenly becomes even more vital.

Good grief, what a pathetic showing by England. Once again Lumb does **** all, what a great opener he is. Fair play to the Netherlands, they clearly deserved the victory and it's nice to see them do well. #Netherlandsforteststatus

Sorry, my vote's going to Jennifer Aniston. We have a great Vorderman replacement in Rachel Riley. :emoticon-0152-heart
