Yes he sang with Coldplay at Live8 I seem to remember. Chris Martin introduced him as the "greatest singer ever".

A *pop" gem from the melody Master, Bob Mould, from 1992 (Dave Grohl freely admits that he ripped him off!)

I think it's safe to say music peaked in the 1990s.

Although the last two or three years have been a sort of mini-renaissance musically.

I thought people would pick me up on that....

But just think of all the great songs there've been in the last year or so:

Somebody That I Used to Know
    I Could be the One
    Hey Brother
    Wake Me Up
Blurred Lines (okay, it's seriously dodgy, but it's damn catchy)
    Counting Stars
    Get Lucky
    Paradise
    Payphone
    Some Nights
    We Are Young
    I Love It

As well as consistently good new artists who have become popular in recent years

    Ellie Goulding
    Taylor Swift
    Katy Perry
    Of Monsters and Men
    Olly Murs

Yes there's been plenty of dross (I'm looking at you, Ylves) but music recently is a damn site better than it was during the dark ages of music between about 2000 and 2004/5 (where was the Killers and the Scissors and that was about it for good music).

Music in the 90s and 00s was a bit ****, bar a few artists and bands. You can name so many people from the 80s, but from the 90s: Oasis, Blur, No Doubt, who else?

Oh come on, Of Monsters and Men are amazing.

    Lightning Seeds.

    Um, Alanis Morrisette?

    Edit: Ace of Base.

From the top of my head, Nirvana, Radiohead, Pearl Jam, RHCP, Smashing Pumpkins, Metallica etc. You don't have to like them all, god knows I don't, but there are a great number of very popular and successful bands from the 90s. There's always good music in every single era. No era has been "****", it's just popular/publicised music that's ****. The charts today are by and large appalling but there's still good music coming out today.

Of course you could say that as music is subjective there's always great music because there's always popular music, but that's kind of an anti-argument.

    Er, Radiohead?

And apparently, PL, Ylvis is the most well-known Norwegian in history.

Also, R.E.M., surprised I missed them.

15 years ago maybe, 10 years ago no. For example, look at the number 1 singles of 2004: http://www.officialcharts.com/all-the-number-ones-singles-list/_/2004/

The best song there is probably Everytime by Britney Spears which just goes to show how bad that year was for mainstream music.

What, not Alexander Rybak? But they won Eurovision with him!

Number 1's do not reflect how crap the music actually is. There are many good songs which don't even get near the top 20.

That said, you saying mainstream music explains a lot.

I'll give you all of them bar Pearl Jam and Metallica as I'm not into heavy metal and I don't know any of Smashing Pumpkins' songs. A lot of those are indie to an extent, which shows that the better music isn't as well publicised.

I'd certainly agree with that point althoguh I'm talking about mainstream music, i.e. the kind of music you're likely to hear on the radio.

Alanis did a great song for the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe soundtrack called Wunderkind, I'd definitely recommend looking it up although it's not 90s!
