But there are 2 sides for every argument, and the death penalty is no exception. There are plenty of scum on this planet who deserve the death penalty. The killers of Lee Rigby for instance.

I don't see why the death penalty is the answer for them. They only killed one person so in that respect they're no worse than any murderer. As long as they're not free to remain in society and be a danger to others I don't see why it should matter to you whether they're alive or not.

I don't care if they only killed one person. The way they did it was brutal and cold blooded. I think people like that don't deserve to live.

There's not really much point continuing this. Either you believe in the death penalty or you don't. No one's going to change their mind.

Especially when they would, if executed, simply become martyrs in the eyes of other radical Islamists and inspire others to perform similar acts of brutality.

You probably should. Society (or, at least, the law) did.

I have no problem if someone is killed when resisting arrest or to prevent a crime, but no civilised society should ever arrange for someone to be killed in cold blood. It diminishes us all. However, they should be given proper prison sentences...not like the mother of baby P released after a few years. Standing by whilst someone dies is the same as murder.

I'm actually worried that society is starting to support the death penalty again (I call it the 'UKIP' effect).

You don't have to worry...the angry and vociferous can appear to be more numerous than they actually are. I doubt the government would go for a referendum on it...and there wouldn't be a yes vote if they did. And where would they get the volunteer from to do it...offer a serial killer amnesty?

I'd do it. It would mean I could be a serial killer in a legal way.

You're a hypocrite if you think it's unacceptable to kill, but acceptable for the government to kill someone who kills.

And some logic. A person who kills someone in a punch up will probably not kill again. A person who stalks and kills a child or has a history of rape will always be a danger, so shouldn't get released. Some would say that the murderer isn't getting a chance to be rehabilitated, but my sympathy remains with any future victims and not with the rights of a dangerous criminal.

No need to worry. Occasionally this gets pushed through Parliament by some of the more swivel-eyed loons we managed to elect but it always gets ignored before anyone actually gets to start debating it.
    http://services.parliament.uk/bills/2013-14/capitalpunishment.html

There were those BNP/EDL types who protested outside the Old Bailey, I'm sure they fully expected the judge to unilaterally declare capital punishment legal (EU bureaucrats changing our laws again). Out here in the real world, things will probably carry on as normal.
