A man after my own heart to be honest.
I get drawn in at times and its hard to ignore in extreme cases, but yeah, the media and fans place far too much emphasis on money.

Top 4 is a must. Don't care about the trophies just yet. There needs to be clear sign of progression.

Lol of course I want to win trophies but that's a short termist approach.

We need CL to help grow and develop for the long term to increase our chances of winning trophies in the future.

How does that make sense? <laugh>
"I dont want to win trophies! I would rather we got in to the Champions League to increase our chance of winning trophies instead!"

When did I say I didn't want to win trophies?

It's about priorities - we need CL in order to attract better players. Having better players then leads to a better team. Which then increases of winning trophies.

Alternatively, we can focus solely on winning the League Cup, finish outside of top 4 then buy average players like Benteke.

Thats the ****ty part to be honest.
Players are so ****ing obsessed with that competition.
Its a cup comp ffs, anyone can win it.
Its like the FA Cup. The best team in the country every year is the PL winner, and how often do they also win the FA Cup?
Once, maybe twice a decade does a team do the double.
**** Wigan won the FA Cup. Little old Porto won the CL.
I sometimes really hate the Champions league.

For me, its definitely net spend thats important.

If you had to sell your best players to get a decent squad then you haven't really spent that large amount to get there. Take it to the extreme example, you buy ronaldo, sell ronaldo to get bale, sell bale to get suarez, sell suarez to get sterling. You would have spent 300m right there but you don't have a 300m worth of team because you had to sell to buy.

  10. I think there is a balance between the two and it depends on individual circumstances. You above example is good for Rafa's time with us but not so much Brod's or Kenny's time since they both wasted a massive sale (although the latter did get Suarez in).

When gauging a managers success, Net spend means dick.
When gauging a finance Director or chairmans success it is what counts.

But managers, regardless of what the club have recouped in sales, if you have had £300m to spend, and havent been able to build a team that can win a trophy, then you have done something wrong.
You sell your best player yes, but like you said, its to get a decent squad.
If you then don't end up with a decent squad, then you have failed.

And in the example you have given, you would still have failed, because I would ask the question, "Why in the **** are selling Ronaldo to buy Bale, then selling Bale to buy Suarez, you obviously have no clue what type of player your squad needs. Yes players can fail, but 3 big money failures in a row would suggest you need to do more scouting and compile more information on a player before you spend a fortune on him."

Irrelevant if a sale recoups the money.
To the manager anyway, to the money man and the tax man it's extremely relevant.
The point is, with £300m spent on a squad, regardless of sales figures, you should be able to build a squad to win trophies.

If Rodgers is going to be blamed for wasting money (leaving aside the committee discussion) he also needs credit for turning £23m of players in Suarez and Sterling into £120m of sales

Sure, he can have that credit.
But its the job of the manager to build a winning football team, not balance the books. Thats the job of the CFO.

And when a manager is hindered in building a winning football team by having to sell players before he can buy, that's when net spend becomes a talking point. I guess that idea is a hard concept for Chelsea fans to understand though

Way to go for having a cheap dig at chelsea when it's not only the chelsea fans saying this and also when i have also argued for net spend <doh>

I responded to a comment from a Chelsea fan. Seems quite obvious I would reference Chelsea in my comment... <doh>
