you can't change the rules within a game.

the world test rubbish is a one off game so the extra day is there to force a result.

in the end England are paying now for a really poor show test 1. early declarationnand poor bowling

    I agree and don’t agree
    Lol
The two games are done result was what it was
But this game is being decided by the weather - worse still it just so happens that it will decide the ashes

it just should not be an option
That’s why people like myself who sort of want to watch just dont bother
    It ruins the whole spectacle

not for one moment suggesting it should be changed mid game just an observation lol

I'm with Mito on this . A test match is over 5 days and the Ashes is a 5 test series .
Personally the appalling over rate by both teams in this series is one reason you might need extra days .

the spring yesterday had the overs flying by.

there should just be no end time but it's 90 overs ****wits and too bad if it's gloomy by the end.
that might stop batseman walking off the crease delaying the game.

yeah but then you would just have teams wasting time during the day so they can bowl in the dark

Shame it’s ended like that but it’s very english to start moaning about how should be extra days play etc in a game where we needed and chasing the win.

How many times has the rain saved us and we hoped for it over the years <laugh>

Cricket is over 5 days. Not logical to build in reserve days everywhere. Maybe in England India Australia it’s ok, everywhere else they lose money on test matches and you can’t then have one set of rules for two or three nations and another for the others.

Why are they starting play at 11am? Why do we need a 20 min tea break? Why do they go off for bad light when you have floodlights? Why do you not start at 9am if you’ve lost 2 hours the previous day? Why are over rates not actually punished.

Pride. Win that it’s 2-2 and would have been a 3-2 win but for the weather. Don’t want to lose your home series so still plenty to play for

Only thing that gets remembered though is who won the Ashes. 5th Test would have been unbelievably tense.

Well I supposed that's what you get for holding a test match in Rainy Manchester.
Surprised Lancashire ever actually finish a county game.

True but australia haven’t won a series in England in 20 years. You don’t want to be part of the team that lost the first series to them in that long. Lots still on the line for the players and 2-2 with a rained off test is a lot better than 2-1 or 3-1 defeats

These are the same criticisms that Wimbledon had to face with all the rain this year.

Why start so late? The answer often given is that they don't think the fans will turn up any earlier. Feels to me more like the poshos running the former 'Gentlemen' sports can't bare the idea of starting early cause this is the way things have always been done.

However 20mins for tea seems reasonable, can't see the problem with that. Its a fairly quick break.

The floodlights, that might have something to do with a 'red' ball. Day/Night matches tend to be played with a white or pink ball.

Over rates, how do you punish? Fines would mean nothing to the game, add or deducting runs seems against the sport.

it'd this simple for me. if you want test cricket you have to figure the solutions.

as of now really there's 3 sides and the rest are falling away a bit.

are they focusing more on odious and t20? who knows.

I don't think the young players want to slog for 5 days bowling and the crowds don't want to have uncertain planning either.

by rights there shouldn't even have been a 5th day today. who wants to buy tickets for that.

I agree with everything you have said
But people within the sport of cricket are moaning every year that other more entertaining formats are going to put an end to the test format

All I have heard is England are on a quest to make the test game entertaining again due to the version of the game having a downturn in popularity

you are in a position where you already and enjoy the game
You appreciate and appear to accept its - quite frankly obvious flaws. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion

but as one of the many who don’t really watch the game avidly
But that could be tempted into watching - let’s say I am currently looking for a new sport

I have just invested my time into the Ashes to witness how it has ended

I can confirm if it had been in Englands favour it would still have left the same sour taste - it just seems daft

the choice of phrase for me here would be - it’s just not cricket - but bizarrely- it is

End result - chances are I don’t bother watching the test cricket again
I won’t be alone in that thinking - I know you and the Cricket loving public will be fine with that and at the end of the day it’s not really a massive issue,
however, Cricket (Test) may suffer in the end as there are other iterations that are far easier to drop into and enjoy.

I used the analogy of an American tv series being cancelled the other day

Test cricket - to me - is like a Star Trek or Star Wars movie where they have gotten so insular no one from outside the fans wants to watch the latest film. Where only the most devoted fans can follow what is actually going on with lots of in house references. If that’s what Cricket wants there is no issue.

Good few games but the Aussies still retained the Ashes and it ended in a damp disappointing squib - which was a shame for all involved
