He's not good enough for people to worry about whether he pays tax or not. I can't believe he has a special offshore account to put his prize money into. The bank will have closed it for being dormant for so long..........
IMHO what he or should I say what his tax advisers told him to do was slightly iffy on the personal use issue but nothing more. The problem is the tax laws allow this sort of elaborate schemes. If the UK government was really bothered they would change the laws. They wont as they and their supporters use the laws so they wont change!
A bit disappointing from Lewis this, all started from him residing elsewhere rather than the UK to avoid tax. But most other drivers do/ have done the same. If he isn't prosecuted for it then I guess it isn't illegal!
He won't be prosecuted as its tax avoidance and not tax evasion. The difference in law is massive, the difference in the eyes of those who read the papers is very little! Besides, he would point to his advisors dealing with the transaction so would claim to be reliant on their advice that what they have done is okay. He'll just get added to the long list of sportsmen around the world who do what they can to pay as little tax as possible.
My take on all this is , he has not broken any laws . in order to change it , the law needs to be changed , TBH I would probably do the same , if I can avoid paying tax LEGALLY , I will do so as long as the opportunity is there . Close the loopholes , don't blame people playing the game .
