I wonder how much work Schumacher put into the car development thought. i.e. he helped to create the car he wanted. So maybe it's also about how well a driver can communicate with the engineers?
I think that was one of Schumacher's abilities. Many will say he raised the bar in driver professionalism and contributed to the team. I should add it takes great machinery, great teamwork and a skilled driver capable of giving good feedback.
This was one of Senna's abilities. Technical advancement has, I feel, placed less dependency on the driver feedback, sadly.
