I have admittedly often been critical of the RL fraternity in our city but I'd just like to commend Hull FC for the respectful tributes they are paying Hull Pal Jack Harrison on the centenary of his VC. Respect where it's due, well played.

Probably more deserving of statue in Hull than anyone else. Someone who won a VC and an MC is a rare person indeed. Should be more honoured in Hull than he is.

You see that small plinth near the KCOM main entrance and you realise that any Dean Windass type statue nearby would look absurd in comparison. You cannot compete with a VC winner.

I'll be at a commemoration for the centenary of Oppy Wood next week. 100 years after the action that Jack Harrison was awarded the VC for took place

Among the 276 men of the East Yorkshire Regiment killed at Oppy Wood was John 'Jack' Harrison, a 26-year-old father-of-one, teacher and Hull FC player. He was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross - Britain's highest gallantry award - for single-handedly charging an enemy machine-gun on May 3, 1917.

I believe John Cunningham was killed in action on May 3rd at Oppy Wood and probably in the same action as Jack Harrison ?

I doubt there were two John Cunningham's in Hull who got the Victoria Cross.

He was awarded his VC for an action in November 16 on the Somme, seperate to Jack Harrison in May 17 at Oppy Wood, and survived to 1941.

Half of the people on lists of notable Hull people weren't born in Hull. Waggy and Chillo for a start. Though I guess most would be happy to see Prescott removed and those two left on.

Cunningham won his VC Battle of Ancre Nov 1916. This day was the biggest loss of Hull men.
