The good thing about a fixed budget is the board are forced to be disciplined with their spending.

We're not going to bend over and pay the going rate. I've said before I'm all for that.

Even with Mount I really hope we don't budge on the £50m. If we agree to the £58m we just send the wrong signal to every other club and make a rod for our own back.

    A center-forward is a must.

Maddison is gone for £40m. On that basis, we should pay no more than £50m for Mount even though I’d rather have Maddison.

Paris Saint-Germain are open to listening to offers for Kylian Mbappe this summer, sources have told ESPN.

ESPN sources added that PSG would be looking for a fee in the region of €150 million ($161.5 million).

I wouldn’t mind the full £120m budget going into this transfer.

If Rice is going for £105m, surely Mbappe is double the player.

Where do you want it to end?
A player is a player and at the end of the day can only do so much on his own.
A team is built and could cost a pittance but all be the right fit, one great player does not guarantee success or even value for money if he doesn't fit in or the system is wrong for him but right for the other 9 outfield players.

So... Mount for £65m... when he's on a free next year.

Or... Mbappe for £150m... when he's on a free next year.

Heaven help us if either of those happen. Mbappe most definitely won't btw.

    It’s £129m not £150m.

Regardless, if Kane is going to go for anything close to £80m that is being speculated, surely Mbappe is worth far more. Is there even a debate there?

We are essentially talking about a generation talent which brings not only quality in skills, but also psychological lift for the team.

If the club is sold, I would expect this to become more of a firm possibility.

Ok, so that's the Mount situation potentially resolved.

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/66028998

This would suggest we are also in for Caicedo. Depends if we believe this to be the case. Are we then happy that the DCM position is being addressed? Arsenal have signed Rice, this puts them out of the running budget wise.

Conceptually, if Caicedo were to be signed, for me it negates the need for a centre half, as he would be played in his prefered position of in front of the back four, freeing up midfielders in Casemiro, Mount, Fernandes and Eriksen in front of him.

    Job done.

We'd then need a striker, admittedly.

It won't be Kane, we won't have money left for Osimhen, and it certainly won't be MBappe.

Goncalo Ramos has been mentioned before and he is being mentioned again. That may be an option.

    Yes, and Hjolund.

Both would be cheaper than either Kane or Osimhen.

Neither a finished article by any means, but you can't just go around paying daft money for finished articles, especially given one is 30.

I'd still be happy enough with trying to get Toney on the cheap(ish) and make do until his ban ends.

I think the issue with Mbappe is his wage bill. While in theory we could afford them both in terms of transfer fee, As I understand it, Kane's wages would see an increase on what Spurs pay him, yet stay within our wage structure whereas Mbappe's wages would us twice as much

Another issue for the striker would be that whoever we buy, they play a game that won't take the goals away from Rashford. No point buying a 20 a season striker only to find they compete with Rashford and his tally for the season drops as happened with CR

I very much like this option. If we are creative, that should be the option we would pursue.

But let’s not discount the buyout. If it happens to be the Qataris, it would mean we can be a little daft with getting an impact player.

This shouldn’t be a problem. We used to have seasons with two players on more that 20 goals. The setup is what matters in yielding that outcome.

Not much likely to happen as regards De Gea - he's just arrived here with his family for his wedding on Saturday.

I am encouraged by it tbh as I think Ten Hag will get the best out of him.

A midfield of Casemiro, Mount and Bruno whets the appetite.

I'm not too pleased we went higher than £50 as I said yesterday but as long as it doesn't take away from the price of a decent CF, fck it.
