And here we have it, he was only ever a backup - from the horse's mouth.

(and as I said previously, he was only ever considered as a winger)

New Liverpool recruit Cody Gakpo has revealed that he thought he was going to join United during the most recent summer transfer window following his recent move at Anfield.

Gakpo, who scored three times for the Netherlands at the World Cup in Qatar, joined Liverpool last week, making the move from Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven for a reported initial fee of £37million.

Now, the winger, who had scored 13 goals in 24 games for PSV this season prior to joining Liverpool, has admitted that he expected to join United back in the summer. The Reds were desperate to strengthen their wide options at the time, but, in the end, were able to land first-choice winger Antony.

Press talk now that De Jong wants to join us after all. Loud chatter here in Spain that he may not play for Barca again after a massive row with the club (Spanish press - so he'll play at the weekend) - but some Barca fans have started to hurl abuse at him on social media. An excellent upgrade on McTominay who sems to have turned into something of an arse these last few weeks and it further strengthens our already solid midfield.

I read yesterday that he wants to come apparently, but it said in the summer not now?

Won't believe anything until Fabrizio says so.

I think Laird's being called back from loan.

And there we go. It starts again.

The DeJong saga is tiring and boring. Let’s move on with who we’ve got rather than chase a player who cannot make up his own mind. The club cannot surely carry on making a fool of itself.

****ing hell man, you're not really taking this in.

There were various obstacles we all tried to point out last summer, they are now gone.

Let's just see what happens, I'm sure it won't go down the route of the club looking foolish.

Would you rather we try, and fail, to go for Bellingham? For utterly stupid money.

We can't just go with who we've got, as that means too much crucial game time to McTominay.
De Jong is tailor made for our midfield alongside Casemiro and Bruno.

I would like to see us sign him. But I’m with Christian that it should not turn into another crazy frenzy of he said, she said.

He surely can’t be the only player in the world that is “tailor made” for our midfield. Did anyone see Casemiro coming? No! Yet he has been wonderful for the team.

Well we needed a proper top class holding midfielder so, while his name came out of the blue then yes, I could see a player like that fitting in. It's not as if he was an unknown.

De Jong isn't the same player by the way, and it's Eriksen who could have been referenced, not Casemiro.

Without wishing to constantly repeat myself, I will anyway. It's obvious that the manager, Ten Hag, identifies de Jong as the player he wants.

There may well be alternatives, but our scouting system has been so ****e over the years would you trust them to find one? Has their success rate of presenting a manager with a player they don't want been great? No, has it ****.

So, just go for the player the manager wants, quite simple really.

And if the answer appears to be no, then look elsewhere. I don’t get the issue with that.

Whatever happens with De Jong, I don't see it happening in January so it's not worth being concerned with atm.

We look to be capable of achieving Top 4 with the midfielders we have. So whilst another creative mf would really put us in a stronger position I don't think it's an immediate concern.

The priority is a No. 9.... well he'll have to play in a No. 7 shirt as the No. 9 is with Martial at the moment but we all know it's a CF we need.

The only thing I'll add is that once again, those clubs in the market like Arsenal and Chelsea are getting their business done early. We on the other hand are slow yet again.

I've a feeling that the sale of the club means the Glazers are reluctant to spend which means we'll be looking for a player on loan and we'll probably get someone who can do a job but won't be our first choice. And we'll spend the whole window to get one in.

Agree, I think we'll go bigger in summer.

I certainly didn't mean we'd go for de Jong this month, for instance.

Mitrovic as a 9 next week though? Man's a beast.

Yeh I didn't mean you, just generally.

Mitrovic would be a great striker to have. We'd have to buy him though but it's looking like we'll only be going for a loan signing. It wouldn't surprise me if we do another Igahlo type.

Is that an actual rumour, or just a thought?

    Morata also been mentioned.

Either or, the fact of the matter is we do not need someone like Felix. Or Gakpo.

We've got Rashford, Martial, Sancho, Antony, Garnacho, Elanga ffs.

We can get no one and bang Maguire up front for the last fifteen minutes I suppose!

<laugh> Have you seen how much Maguire gets marked on the corners alone now.

Giroud is a rumour. But I would take it if it's true. He scores goals, times his runs like any top striker and also a fox in the box. Just what we need for the rest of the season.

I'm not keen on Morata, never been impressed by him tbh. He's the opposite of Giroud imo.

Giroud would make better use of the many crosses we put in than anyone we have at the moment, Morata no way, Benzema would be nice if available <whistle>.

If we do go down the aged short term route again then i would sincerely hope that someone at the club started active negotiations NOW for a permanent striker in the summer, signed, sealed and deposit paid if necessary .

Oi less of the old, Giroud is 2 yrs younger than Ronaldo lol

Agree, Murtough has to get the targets sorted. The problem is this whole thing around the sale of the club and whether Glazers are going to stop spending.

Timing is so ****, fcking pricks could've done this any time over the last 5 years when we were going nowhere, but choose to do it now. Utter ****s!
