It’s the law of supply and demand. Once a player is wanted by another club, the price of retaining him goes up. If PSG who seem to be genuinely interested are prepared to pay him that figure, Utd have no choice than to match it. Unless they are prepared to let him go.

Sure he is not worth 400k/week but he’s one of our few home grown stars and he’s still young.

He was on £200k a week.

Do you not think each case is individual? I mean, if he's our home grown star then convincing him to stay and negotiating a more modest increase? Instead of doubling it just to ward off other clubs unable to meet the salary.

Once again, I'm only saying this because of the repercussions it has on the rest of the squad and players we may be interested in buying and their motivation for coming.

I get your point. I think we should be able to rely on some loyalty from him. He was brought up by Utd who gave him his break. And he’s a fan of the club too.

But these can only count up to a point. Because the chasing club is PSG who was prepared to give MBappe literally hundreds of millions to retain him. Utd had to make Rashford’s decision to leave the club more difficult. Giving him a small rise to say 250k might be dwarfed by an offer of 500-600k from PSG. But 400k might make him stay…

Not fussed at all tbh. He was only ever a backup if we didn't get Antony who is the better player. The fact we waited the whole transfer window for him when Gakpo was ready to move shows how much Ten Hag wanted Antony and how little he wanted Gakpo.

I've seen enough of him to say he's average. I remember @Christiansmith saying the same. I also rate Diaz and Jota higher so it's a wonder why they've wasted the money.

We need to focus on ourselves. He's not what we need. We need a quality CF, that's our priority. And another CM. That's what we should be focusing on.

It's such a shame about Ivan Toney. He'll probably get a 6 month ban, but no way we can buy him with this betting **** hanging over him. We're relying on players from all over the pitch scoring but we need a pacey Number 9 who can put away the chances we're creating in the box.

i watched him in a few matches in Europe this season . To say I was underwhelmed would be a massive understatement. He was worse than average and I was wondering even back then why we were chasing him.

normally I would have been cheesed off by Utd being gazumped in this way by the RS but in this case I couldn’t give a **** and they are more than welcome to him. TenHag hinted at this when he said he was looking for a striker of a high standard.

No one had heard of him before the WC except United fans who knew back in August bcos we had the option to buy.

He's literally become flavour of the month after 2/3 goals in a world cup, and the livpl fans and media suddenly making out it's a coup <laugh> He's about the level of Zaha when he played for us.

Btw I'm not sure why we're going for Joao Felix. He's a decent enough attacking midfielder but not a number 9.

Unless the plan is to play Felix behind the a CF. But that then means dropping/rotating one of Bruno or Erikksen.

Not remotely arsed we're not in for Gakpo, but apparently Twitter says that all United supporters are in uproar so I must be wrong.

The same twitterati who hadn't heard of him 4 weeks ago.

I've not seen a Livpl fan who had either btw.

I thought more about your initial point weeks ago that he’s not a player that we need and I agreed with you on that point. Although I disagree that he’s a dud player, he’s just not the player that this current squad needs. I would also hate to bring in any player that will disrupt Garnacho’s development from the left side. And we also have Jadon (albeit with his own issues right not). Either way, we have enough players on that left flank. So no fuss at all seeing him going to Liverpool.

I wouldn't say he's a dud. But not the level required. He's a Jermaine Pennant on the left wing.

And you're right about Garnacho. Easily a player with more potential.

We've got Rashford, Martial, Antony, Garnacho, Sancho and Elanga.

All forwards who come in off the right or left.

In what rational world do you add Gakpo to that?
    We need a No.9 for **** sake.

But, Twitter says we're all outraged so I guess we must really want him.

Felix is now the next name on the list. Again, I don’t see why we would bring him in.

I don’t know if we would bring in a striker in January. But I can see us being connected back to Kane in the summer with one year left on his contract by then.
