By making one team play several games more than others. At least this way everyone would be in the same boat. A 'blanket' approach, as a null-and-voider said a short while ago. Apparently that ensures fairness.

Whatever happens, this season is special. Not special as the '39 season were they only played 3 games (but is still somehow a precedent for a season three-quarters of the way through 80 years later), but special as in however it ends will be totally unprecedented. And if the pandemic lasts until December, how do you propose to finish next season without adjustments to next seasons cup competitions? Next season will need to be amended, no matter happens from now.

Yes, it happens quite often when teams do well in multiple competitions instead of ditching some.

Next season and whatever issues it may or may not face, are next season’s problem.

If this season can’t be played out, before the next one is due to commence, then it should go in the bin. Simple really.

Tobes - you're getting likes off Diego: isn't it time to call it off until tomorrow?

We can call today's conversation null and void, if it pleases you, and I'll try not to deduct points from your league standings that you had help from Lossiemouth Man. :emoticon-0142-happy

Maybe by not starting it if things are so bad?

Just imagine missing next season too, Mo and Mane aren't getting any younger :bandit:

Er, you just intimated that next season's formats were sacrosanct? Btw, I'm trying to find where anyone, even Astro, said playing into next year was an option. I could have missed it, tbh, as I'm dipping in and out between watching Killing Eve.

They're still younger than Rashford, if you go by body age.:emoticon-0143-smirk

Hmm. Think you gave the game away when you let slip the Prem had divvied up the prize money on the standings now, tbh. But I'll let you have the last word. :emoticon-0100-smile

Have one for Diego too: I'm up at 4.30 tomorrow and I'm not playing 'I know what you are, but what am I?' all night with the site's Roger Irrelevant. :emoticon-0105-wink:

He'll break something else if he tries to pick up Sanchez's wage packet again.

In fairness, the "integrity" of the European Cup disappeared when they changed it to a league format and re-titled it "Champions" when the majority of teams taking part in it are not ... that aside, you raise a good point <laugh>

As a Newcastle fan I'd still be unsurprising if we managed to get relegated from there. As for Villa they have a game in hand are only 2 points from safety with 10 games to go. I'd be pretty annoyed if it was decided we were just relegated from there. I'd say it was much fairer for no-one to be relegated or promoted than for the current standings to dictate it.

PS. I don't see the reason for the delay of the league to have any bearing on what happens next, can we stop trying to moralise everything as it doesn't help.

That would very much be the case if they go down that route to be honest.

People are obviously entrenched for partisan or comedic reasons but provided they can have the 90-odd league games and 15 FA cup games played out by the end of July it's clearly much fairer to play out the season even if it's a bit rushed. At the moment France is looking to get things moving again by mid-May so the UK must be looking for the end of May really and once the government says schools of 1k+ pupils can reconvene it's hard to argue football can't be played in empty stadiums.

I hope the season can conclude bu if, however, the games cannot be fitted in by the end of July I just can't see the season being finished. Liverpool will - and should - be crowned champions but all relegations and promotions will be denied. I can't see the Champions League games being played at all (so teams like Man City miss out). There is no "fair" solution here, words like that are being thrown around to try and gain moral capital but it's a nonsense and we all know it really.

As for financing, there will surely be some insurance for games which cannot take place within timescales due to frustration of contract and rumours (and they are just rumours) that Sky may forgo claiming back money for games which have to be cancelled. The balance there is only a fraction of the money they will get from next season, the TV companies don't care in the slightest about the "integrity of the game" so once we get to June/July they will want the players to be back in pre-season training for a 38 game season rather than a 9-10 game stint. More games the better in their eyes.
