According to a report in The Times on Saturday, advertisers are ‘so worried about being accused of racism or homophobia’ that they are shying away from using images of white people and straight couples. A survey of 500 companies by Shutterstock Inc reveals that a third of advertisers questioned said they had used fewer white models and heterosexuals over the past year, and they were taking this approach to ‘prevent perceived discrimination’. Marketing departments are even putting diversity above relevance to their target audience, ‘to avoid accusations of bigotry’.
That ethnic minorities are over-represented in television adverts has become obvious over the past 12 months. If you live in London, Birmingham or Manchester, where the majority of ethnic-minority Britons live, or places with sizeable or majority ethnic-minority populations, such as Leicester, Bradford, Oldham or Burnley, you may not have noticed this. But I wouldn’t be surprised if the rest of Britain has. I have anyway. The Britain as represented on television adverts these days scarcely resembles the east Kent in which I live. For example, while there are hardly any white faces in current McDonald’s adverts, there are hardly any black faces in McDonald’s in Dover or Folkestone.
It’s a similar story for the over-representation of gay people. Big cities and Brighton have their gay communities, gay residential areas and Gay Pride marches, but the rest of Britain only has gay individuals. I happen to live in a town that has always had a large gay population, but it’s never had a gay ‘community’. Here they have always been middle-aged or pensioners, long settled with their partners and well beyond the age of playing the mating game or needing to proclaim who they are.
According to The Times report, half the advertisers said ‘they were using fewer white people because they no longer represented “modern society”‘, which seems a somewhat peculiar, and certainly metrocentric, viewpoint. Still, if advertisers feel such a move is commercially wise, if they want to appeal primarily to the big conurbations, and if they want to incorporate diversity into their ‘brand’, so be it. Tokenism is their prerogative, as is virtue signalling. And after all, there’s nothing new about advertisers getting ‘with it’ in order to sell commodities. Benetton was famous for it in the 1990s and today Kenco and BP flaunt their ethical and socially conscientious credentials, while current adverts for Maltesers feature disabled people.
There’s nothing wrong about modern adverts representing modern Britain in its diversity. The real problem here stems from that all-too-pervasive word of today: ‘perceived’, which is central to current ‘hate crime’ legislation (see last week’s column). It would have been a healthy and normal thing if advertisers had made this decision of their own volition. That they have made this overcompensatory move because they fear accusations of racism or ‘perceived discrimination’ is, conversely, thoroughly depressing.
Racism has become such an obsession these days – and ‘perceived racism’ a nebulous, unverifiable and irrefutable one at that – that it has almost seeped into the collective unconscious. Racism for white people has become the secular equivalent of Original Sin: it is now taken that we are all born into it, we all carry it around within, and we all must atone for it – even if we haven’t done anything racist or said anything racist. Much as Roman Catholics are told to go to confession even if they haven’t consciously sinned, we must conduct ourselves as if we are guilty.
Not since Robertson’s jam removed the golliwog from its labels in 2002 has there been anything with remotely, tangibly racist connotations on foodstuffs or commodities. No one has been complaining about racism in adverts. These 500 companies have not responded to any campaign, pressure group or government legislation. Rather, they have taken the initiative because they are terrified of future accusations of potential, ‘perceived’ racism. At once they are rationally conscious that sooner or later the nebulous accusations will arrive – the insatiable dynamic of the offence-takers and racism-seekers dictates that it will do sooner or later. Yet at the same time, our racism-obsessed society has instilled in them an irrational, nagging feeling somewhere in the recesses of their minds that they must atone for having done something wrong. Even though they haven’t.

Madness, utter madness. We've already descended too far, I dread to think what the bottom's going to look like. Who knows though, maybe a bit like the people fighting back against political oppression, maybe it'll get to such an utterly ludicrous point that there'll be a backlash. A return to common sense? I personally doubt it though.
Would never have guessed that Labour have issues with the proposed immigration points system.......

My first thoughts are how can gun licenses still exist. I see no reason for anyone outside the military or police to have a need for a gun. Its like applying for a *****philia license - you know the person applying has some serious issues.

Look,,, I'm 71yrs old and I'm a rabid Brexiteer. I love Europe, but I hate the EU with a consuming passion (a contradiction in terms, but I'm sure you follow my drift?!). Having voted to join the "Common Market" in 1973, and then witnessing the destruction of our fishing industry (I was an Indentured Marine Engineer, employed by Boston Deep Sea in Lowestoft) I was left feeling an unbridled hatred for the burgeoning EU Institution.
Ted Heath & Harold Wilson sold their/our Country down the "EU river", Theresa May likewise (but even more under handedly, the bitch should be chained to a wall in The Tower!).
The French,,, our so called Neighbours & Friends,,, the very same Nation that the Allies liberated in 1945... at a HUGE cost,,, Having fought so gallantly to repeal the advancing Nazi Hordes in 1941, my arse! the French surrendered en masse,, without firing a single shot at their German Cousins,,, would you believe over 200,000 of them just rolled over and welcomed the Bosch across their border.
And to this day the French revere DeGaulle, General Charles DeGaulle,,, their hero of WW2,,, the General who was engaged in one tank battle (observing from a huge fortified bunker well out of range of the Panzer Cannon).
And what did the Gallant General do after the French surrendered the Tank battle,,,?
Why, he jumped on a RAF Plane and legged it to London, where he spent the next four years living off the fat of the land (at our expense) and earned his "hero" tag by broadcasting radio speeches (from the safety of the Whitehall Bunkers) to the French "Resistance" urging them to "continue the fight against the Bosch"!
That's one hell of a hero,,, to hero worship,,, innit?!
Then,,, following the slaughter of the Allies on the Normandy Beaches and the subsequent advance toward Paris, General Charles DeGaulle, DEMANDED that he be flown back to France so as he could march at the front of the Liberating Coloum into Paris... Wadda GUY! Wadda HERO!
And then pray, what did the hero General DeGaulle, do when the UK first applied to join, and made repeated requests to join, the "Common Market",,, did he welcome his friends and saviours with open arms,,,? No!
Completely the opposite in fact,,, DeGaulle stood to attention in the European Parliament, and, with the blood of thousands of Allied young Soldiers dripping from his cowardly French tongue and fingers, he said "Non" and then again he said "Non" and then again he said "Non",,,
Kinda makes me weep.

Incredible if true. This would have been totally unbelievable not that long ago. Scary times ahead.
I dunno, but this just seems so out of touch for me. The war ended 75 years ago - he wasn't even born, and to be ranting on about how nations behaved back then seems so far from what's going on in the world now. He seems to have a lot of bitterness for those times and is carrying it into todays generation.
He's right though, we definitely do need non skilled labour. I just don't see why it has to come from outside the UK. We have enough unemployed non-skilled chavs here to fill those jobs. However, they aren't prepared to work these jobs as they are too ****ing lazy and have the benefits system wrapped around their nicotine stained fingers. If we have Bulgarians prepared to move all the way here for a job, then why can't someone in Swansea can get a job picking fruit in the North of England ?

This is primarily why I voted for Brexit. This kind of totalitarian nonsense. The saddest thing about the Brexit divide for me was the lack of critical debate and instead anyone who voted for Brexit was automatically shouted down for being a racist.
