As well I like that we've got Leon on load for the entire season - no worrying about whether it'll be Extended as each month comes to an end like we were forced to do with Matty Fry (that sort of thing must only disrupt match preparation) With the Doc and Mambo I still think the latter will be in our JPT and Carling Cup Squads, just with Doherty being injured Powell might think that our Defence would be extremely stretched if we did get another injury
You're right, Irish - my mistake. OK, now we've signed him would someone like to spell out to me v-e-r-y s-l-o-w-l-y why, because I don't get this at all, although I think that's certainly part of the reason, A4L.
I'm not certain I understand this one either. I reckon Mambo did well enough to earn the place he had on the bench on saturday and I for one would be happy to see him get a couple of games under his belt. Doc has always been good enough to head a ball out but understand that he he is not quick over the ground these days, but still played well last Tuesday. Hughes covers across the back four as well so I'm just confused by this move.
The only conclusion I can draw is that CP doesn't think Mambo is good enough, in which case why did he get a contract extension?
Mambo could be going out on loan to a conference/league 2 club to get some significant game time under his belt?
Orrrrrrrr the doc is surplus to requirements, he leaves and cort takes his place. As much as I don't understand it- weren't people suggesting the other day that another defender and striker was needed?
I agree a defender was required, and I reckon Cort is the one. Remember when he was at Palarse he was seriously good, seems to have lost his way a bit at Burnley, but reckon he's a good Championship defender... and I think Powell will have signed him for a year with one eye on a permanent move. I'll feel a lot better about any potential injury to either CB now. Just the 4th striker required now.
Great signing and hopefully spells the end of the doc, or he stays as 4th choice and mambo goes out on loan. The later would be my preferred option.
Agreed... would love to see Mambo go to a L1 or L2 side where he can play regularly and prove himself, then bring him back in January if he has.
I dont see how you can say that after large chunks of the press praised Mambo's contribution in the Reading match. When he has played for us he has shown that he is developing well and will become a class centre back probably at a higher level than we are currently playing. I also think it is perverse for us to give him a years extension and then loan him out for the year, that would be complete financial stupidity. My guess is that he will be played and that Cort will come in alongside him with Doc being a back up or being sold now or in January. I think CP's words after the reading match may have benn to stick rather than twist, but the Cort move may well have been in train before he said that. My fear is that the clubs at the top of each division and I include ourselves in that are taking squad players on almost to prevent the opposition from having them, certainly that is the way that Chelski and Mancity think. It may be the way to get promotion, but also to have disgruntled players.
I just think mambo needs a run of games at a competitive level to aid his development (he is certainly capable of becoming a class CB) so I can see him going out on loan until January with Doc staying until then - This deal would give us the cover to make it possible and Cort has shown previously that he can play at a higher level so he's definatly the sort of player CP was looking to add to the squad
Seems a sensible enough move in my opinion. Last year, from memory, we used Dailly, Doc, Mambo, Llera, Fry and Fortune at CB (plus Seip was signed on loan as cover). As already mentioned a season long loan negates the need for constant resigning of one player or for the need of other short term loans. We will need plenty of cover throughout the season.
It is a shame that we have made a loan signing. After the last two years of loans, loans, loans I wanted our squad to be all fully paid-up Charlton players. We don't need this signing. Mambo and Hughes offer adequate cover for the centre-back positions. Even the arthritic troll can do a job if needs be.
I think he is being brought in as cover. From his interview on the skysports site, he talks about suspensions etc
Hughes has been many things in his career, Ponders, but I don't think he's ever been a centre back. We needed someone else, as there is no way Morrison and Taylor will get through the season without suspension/injury, Doc is past it now (I certainly wouldn't want him starting a game) and Mambo is still raw and ideally will get experience on loan elsewhere. Cort provides experience and hopefully at least Championship quality. Good move CP
I'm happy with it- plenty of Premiership and Championship experience. How many teams in this league have a player of Cort's ability/experience as a 3rd choice centre back?
