Normally I would agree with you BUT of late I think he has, just maybe, turned a corner. He has made some good strategy observations, quite quick in his thinking, these last few races he is beginning to perform. This is only his second year with Ferrari who last year had a poor performing car. I don't yet rule him out of proving to be a top driver.
I certainly think he's very good - in a Perez/Coulthard type way (possibly a little bit better than them). I just don't think he's super-special in a Max/Charles/Lewis way (and possibly could add George and Lando to that).
Struggling to rationalise “super special” against “like potentially a quarter of the grid” to be honest… The difference between Sainz and Leclerc over their two seasons together, has essentially been that Leclerc was immediately more comfortable in year’s car. Leclerc also seems to be the better qualifier, which over time should lead to a sustained advantage in a competitive field. Personally, I’m yet to be convinced that either could be considered in the “special” bracket, although both are clearly very good.
