Lennon or Walnut?

Discussion in 'Tottenham Hotspur' started by Hoddle is a god, Jan 12, 2012.

  1. Pity you can't even get your own stats right - according to the Goons own website Walnut has played 23 games with 3 sub appearances and scored 4 goals: Lennon has played 16 games and scored 4 goals.
Now Maths was never my strong point but I am sure that represents a better goal to game ratio.....

You did say this season, right?
Friendlies are, by their definition, pre-season.

Aaron Lennon - helping us mount a title challenge

Walnut - helping you consolidate 5th or 6th

that is the bottom line when it comes to importance and affectivness <ok>

  8. I'm just disappointed that more Gooners didn't take the bait.

Mind you, it's not easy to stop a juggernaut when it's a-rollin', so I am not surprised.

    Disappointed, yes; surprised, no.

Wilshere vs Modric appears to be the new one that's going to drag on for seasons whilst Gooners convinve themselves that Modric's low assists and goals make him worse than Benayoun

They are amazingly devoted to stats. You've only got to watch Modric for 10 mins to see how much he adds by being able to take the ball in a crowded midfield, (almost) never lose it, beat a player and then pass to someone in the space he has created. He often does this quite deep so doesn't directly create a goal or an assist, but he's incredibly important to our style of play.

The same applies to Adebayor, in my opinion.
As Phil Neville pointed out in an interview today, he needs to be marked by two defenders, so it frees up other players and allows us to play the way that we do.
That's not reflected in any stats.

His run to take a defender away from Bale, so that he could score the 2nd against Norwich was key to the goal, but it doesn't count as an assist.
This is where stats fall down.

Totally agree PnP. This is why we need someone else too - an in-form Defoe might score nearly as many goals but he has nowhere near the influence on the match. I see his best role as an impact sub.

totally agree, however for wingers I believe it's different as they are generally relied on for assists/goals more than CM's.

Each case is different though, Drogs.
As I've been discussing elsewhere, Lennon's mere presence disrupts other teams.
His pace and the way that he hugs the sideline forces players out of position.
That creates more space for those in the middle, which is why Adebayor, van der Vaart, Bale and Defoe are all scoring quite regularly.

Walcott plays more directly and more centrally, which reflects in his stats.
He doesn't create the space that Lennon does though, nor does he defend as well, which is part of the winger's game that's often ignored.

Make no bones about it, I'd take Lennon over Walcott any day of the week. Never rated the guy, just an athlete with studs instead of spikes! Just saying that I think statistics are important when comparing wingers.

  20. Drogs, do you believe that you will finish above the Gooners?
