That's all very true but another point Id forgotten is the huge difference in footballs from thirty years ago and their flight. I could be wrong but I assumed one of the main reasons for keepers punching the ball so much now is the extra swerve and unpredictability of the ball flight. If we've any goalies on board Im sure I'll be corrected. Just think coaches in their sixties are too far removed from the modern game for the most part

Interesting point Eire. On the one hand continental keepers were historically taught to punch more than British ones. Yes modern balls move more which adds risk though I’d say it’s more an issue with misjudging swerving shots than crosses but wound agree it’s a factor. To counter that modern keeper gloves have much more ‘stickability’ than old gloves.

I think it’s more a reaction to risk over time… The conclusion that a mistimed/dropped catch is riskier than a mistimed punch.

As for keeper training. Yeh the fundamentals are unchanged but it’s so much about distribution now that some clubs prioritise ball skills over ‘keeping’. Man City graduates being a case in point - pep, kompany. They genuinely see an ‘extra outfield player’ as more valuable than the occasional great save. Any keeper coach now has to focus on distribution.

Interesting on goal keeping and agree with all of you. Saw it reported Ederson ai Man City started as a midfielder but wasn’t considered good enough so switched to goal keeper which explains his distribution. Now being said this is being considered for other outfield players they think won’t be good enough so going back to the original point a coach of Seaman’s ability might be just what is needed in the future, i.e. not train keepers to play the ball out but coach outfield players in how to play as a goalkeeper.

What's wrong with our current coach ? , former Redbridge FC, Halstead Town and Redbridge goalkeeper Ed Wootten.

Also, having seen the size of DS when he did the FA Cup draw recently, he would make Peter Shilton look agile ;)

An exception in fairness. For every one of him there are dozens of Bruces Warnock's McCarthys, Big Sam's etc still stealing a living from the game with outdated tactics and ideas
