Also Villa vs Sheff Utd next week and we're a point behind them both so if we beat one vowel away from the truth then we'll be in the play-offs

Leeds almost signed Tottenham star Harry Kane before this happened, ex-Spurs scout reveals
LEEDS UNITED came close to signing Tottenham striker Harry Kane, according to former Spurs scout David Magrone.

Harry Kane almost left Tottenham for Leeds in 2014
It looked like Kane would never make it at Tottenham, having been sent out on loan spells to Leyton Orient, Millwall, Norwich and Leicester.

But the Spurs academy product has emerged as one of the club’s most valuable players, scoring 112 goals in 177 appearances since breaking into Tim Sherwood’s first team in the 2013/14 campaign.

However, if it weren’t for Sherwood, the 24-year-old striker could be plying his trade in the Championship with Leeds.

Leeds made a move for Kane in 2014 and Tottenham were considering it before Sherwood, who worked with him in Spurs’ youth system, convinced the club to keep him.

“There was serious consideration at the club to letting him go to Leeds”

    David Magrone
"There was serious consideration among the hierarchy at the club to letting him go to Leeds because he'd been out on loan and had never really set the world on fire," said Magrone, who spent three years as a scout at White Hart Lane.

"But Tim [Sherwood] knew he was a Premier League player in the making, and really didn't want to let him go, even if the chairman (Daniel Levy) possibly did.”

Kane has been heavily linked with European champions Real Madrid, but he recently admitted he would be happy to see out his career at Tottenham Hotspur.

And Magrone went on to say how Kane always believed he could make it at his boyhood club.

"Harry had loans at Orient, Millwall, Norwich and Leicester and there was a bit doubt over whether he'd progress to the point where he'd be Premier League material," Magrone added.

"It wasn't like he was costing the club too much or anything like that, it was really a question of whether he was going to make it at Tottenham.

"It was really only Harry's desire to dig and prove himself at the top level and Tim's belief in him that stopped him going (when the offer came in).

"He backed his ability and the rewards are fully deserved. I don't think he once seriously considered going."

Ok, just got back and will write my views before reading back.

Norwich are better than their league position suggests and if I were one of their fans I would probably feel a bit hard done by tonight. Very tidy between penalty areas. Having said that, we could just as easily have won by more.

Their travelling fans are woeful. A couple of bursts of “yellows, yellows” just before kick off was about all I heard from them. Our crowd were really good, never went flat like it sometimes does without being full on rocking.

Overall, I thought at times we looked like a young, somewhat naive team, but then I guess we are if you look at the ages in our team.

    Individually:

Wiedwald, couldn’t fault him. Couple of good saves, particularly one early in the second half where he stood tall one on one, something I don’t think he did earlier in the season. Comfortable with numerous back passes and good distribution. Well played Sir.

Ayling, back to his best. Comfortable in possession and a leader. Interestingly, can’t remember him being fouled or, rather, looking for fouls today. Jock pointed out a long time ago he is still vulnerable to raw pace and crosses can come in from his side, the one thing that probably stops him being a Premier League potential.

Cooper and Jansson rock solid. Pontus probably motm today but Cooper not far behind.

Berardi ok. Wins more than his fair share of headers for a small guy, good blocking and some decent tackles. However, needs to stand up and not rush in so often (gets caught and we open up), offers very little going forward (one decent shot aside) and could have cost us a couple of times with sloppy passes inside.

Cibicki I like the look of. Prepared to win his share in the air and a good football brain. Not as quick as Sacko but much cleverer with his final balls. Also confident enough to demand the ball at free kicks and corners.

Phillips and Viera battled constantly in the middle. Vieira is undoubtedly more talented but not quite at it today and his passing radar needed re-calibration. Phillips, very close to motm, I honestly think we would have lost without him. So many crucial blocks and headers in difficult situations and always tried to drive the team forward. Never going to be eye catching but watch him closely and I think you would understand his teammates appreciating more than most.

Saiz is always a great outlet. Turns dangerous situations into opportunities. Didn’t quite always work for him today but still the first name on the team sheet for me.

Alioski, sort of 7/10. Worked hard, shut down, always an outlet but didn’t ever really threaten either.

Roofe was Roofe. Tidy, nice touches, worked really hard but just isn’t any kind of target man. You can see why it works better for him away when the onus is on the home team to attack and he has space to run into but at home, marshalled by 2 Centre Backs he will always struggle.

Subs?? TC, unless there were injuries that we couldn’t see from the stands what were you doing? We won but we certainly didn’t close it out, changing shape and the formation was just odd and we could easily have come unstuck.

Hernandez (sorry Ristac), yes. Used his skill, experience and nouse well and was crucial near the end but, Pennington I hardly noticed and was just pointless and Grot? If someone had told me we could replace Doukarra like for worse I would have laughed. Utter garbage.

We move on and, if we build on this through a favourable looking set of fixtures from now to the end of January we could be in a great position but........you wouldn’t be thinking promotion is realistic if you went today I am afraid.

Someone actually proffered this as an explanation to Grot getting a run out as we left the ground today on the basis that it is the only possible way he could be pleasing TC!

Is that our great leaders who took up the option on Jansson so he didn’t sign for Southampton? o_O

Wise words as ever Duke. Funny thing is, inside the ground it didn’t feel like Grot was being slaughtered, plenty of vocal support but.... he just doesn’t look a player, doesn’t kill people with pace or strength, haven’t seen him win a header, no passes you would remember, never forced a save from a goalkeeper and sort of stumbles in possession. So, for all of the 20odd year olds we have signed for our development squad why oh why is he in a first team he should be nowhere near?

No. It was previous leader who set up the deal. Orta would never have scouted Jansson

I’ve been impressed with Hernandez the last few times he has played, I have admitted so too ;)

Seen a few reports stating how vital Phillips was today, saw another that said after 60 minutes Vieira pass accuracy was 0%

Good to read reviews of people who went, I spoke to a few mates earlier too. Although grateful for Elland supplying a stream it was atrocious quality and you certainly couldn’t judge anyone from it good or bad.

    A very honest appraisal, & I agree.

One thing puzzled me, as we couldn't see it from where we were. It appears that there was some sort of altercation near the South Stand cheese wedge, resulting in our 2 CBs & their CF all being booked. What happened?

Heard another aspect to Weidwald's howler last week, one that I hadn't noticed, and, tbh, might not even have happened! :D Bloke was saying that an opposition player was in an offside position & advanced towards the ball, forcing Weidwald to come off his line to intervene. Imagine if that guy was onside, & Felix had stayed on his line. What a stramash there would be if he scored! Did notice the odd bounce on the telly replay myself, but didny notice the chalk mentioned earlier. At half time today, the goal was a topic of much conversation, but unusually, the majority were standing up for Weidwald. Wonder if the tide is changing for him?

Final word (hopefully) on Weidwald - we've won 10 out of 12 points (83%) since his return. First spell was 20 out of 33 (61%). That's a 33% improvement! Hope he keeps it up. Oh, and for the record, Lonners won 6 out of 21 (29%). Impressive. Not!
