One thing missing from Phil Hays YEP article on keepers, is that Felix played against worst teams than Lonners did, but I think Lonners was at fault for more irrespective of who we were playing against.
Yeh he had nothing to do... i’ve heard people say he organised the defence but really? Lonergan is a better goalkeeper if you ignore the catastrophic mistakes... but you can’t really can you?!
Really disappointed Terry isn’t playing Friday, would like to see Roofe and Ekubam play together up front, there runs across the back four are impressive and a defenders nightmare!! Terry would be made look a knob in which he is. With Saiz and Alioski playing with form would cause Villa an headache but we need an anchorman in midfield to break there build up play, it’s going to be a tough one.
Interesting. I didn't read the article, but if you think about it logically, if you get a hot run like we started with, you're going to play a lot more teams below you than above you. If you're nosediving, like we then did, more and more teams pop up above you. I'm not sure it's a fair comparison. I had actually been looking at the Weidwald v Green performances over the 12 'rounds' that Weidwald has played, to see if I could find a fair comparison. I think I may have managed it. Here goes ...... I looked at the league position of the opposition before each match, and totted them all up (place '0' assumed for both opening matches). BOTH totalled 131! Which is as good a comparison as you can get. Effectively, the teams faced by both averaged the same league position profile +/or quality. Weidwald 2017: won 23 points, conceding 12 goals, with 7 clean sheets. Green 2016: won 19 points, conceding 13 goals, with 4 clean sheets. Makes interesting reading. Bottom line - against equivalent opposition, both had apparently similar performances, but when you look at percentages, you find that the Weidwald run earned us just over 20% more points!! Significant. So, between this set of numbers & the previous analysis I did a few days ago, it's clear that Weidwald has been very unfairly treated. He has clearly been better than Green, and streets ahead of Lonergan. In the modern game, especially with the system we use, it's not just about the goalie preventing goals, it's just as much about him keeping the tempo high and creating opportunities with fast & accurate distribution, which will ultimately lead to more goals. This was made so clear with Lonergan in goal. He failed in both areas. I can provide the data I collated if anyone is sufficiently sad (read 'daft') to want to see it.
That's good WJ but as something Hay partly alluded to near got expanded on, which is the number of shots on target each keeper faced in the games. I'm old fashioned and for me a goalkeeper needs to better at keeping the ball out of his net than playing little short passes to his defenders (Bravo at city got dropped for this very reason) Felix needs to be a goalkeeper not third centre half. So I'd like to know the percentage of saves made by Lonegran, Green & Felix per shots on target faced. My main criticism of Felix was how poor he is / was coming off his line. Always appeared to bottle it for me, especially against Sheff U if I remember rightly.
Hi guys first post so be gentle. On the subject of keepers I'm with Leeds60, Alex Mcarthy would be a great signing, one of the best keepers we've had in recent times. I'm quite close to the goals in the south stand and have to say that Felix has absolutely no presence or bottle and that's one thing you can't coach. I've no doubt about it if we persevere with him he will cost us more points than he earns us.
Morning Nick it will be good to see if you think he's improved/ changed at all as I'm guessing he will be in the nets for the Villa match
Hi Eric I'm sure he will be in goal on Friday but I'm not convinced he's going to improve, think the first thing he needs to learn is to catch the ball. It is really infuriating watching a keeper punching the ball rather than catching it especially when the ball is at chest height or lower. Used to watch silvestri warming up pre match and he would catch every ball the trainers put into him. As soon as we kicked off he wouldn't even attempt to catch it,
Welcome aboard Nick, as I said elsewhere I think Wiedwald is the only one likely to improve and therefore the best option available at present - I agree with you though, he's not the type you expect to see wading through a crowded box knocking attackers flying to claim the high ball! We live in hope.
Yeh the shots per goal thing is a standard benchmark, but frankly even that’s not a reliable measure... and skewed by the formation of the team, whether they allow crosses, whether they allow long range strikes etc. And then, whether a keeper is coming for crosses etc. The ones that do, reduce the number of shots (headers) on target and knock downs giving close range shots.... but gift wrap open goals when they mess up. Over the course of a season it’s the best benchmark you have but it doesn’t tell the story... i think with keepers it’s more a qualitative assessment than a quantitative one. For example in the green v wiedwald comparison, for the first part of this season we were dominating possession and restricting sides chances... it had diddly to do with wiedwald marshalling the defence. Last year we never dominated possession and sides had us penned in for large periods of most games, especially away from home. Completely different circumstances. When that has happened this year... Wednesday, millwall etc... wiedwald has been at sea. I hope Felix comes good, really I do. But green was one of our top players last year after a shaky start. I think wiedwald got too much criticism and was a bit of a scapegoat but trying to find figures to suggest Felix is better than green is lies damn lies and statistics... In my most humble of opinions... because as I have said, it’s a qualitative thing
Not sure who this new guy nick thinks he is. Waltzing In with his measured, sensible articulate posts. I hope to read some suitably Derranged rants soon, before we have to point out to him he’s not cut out for this place.
I was at that game with a couple of Southampton supporting mates, proper took the piss at half time. I thought to myself it's going to be a long second half, could end up losing 6-0 Dennis Wise was Saints player manager and substituted himself at halftime thinking job done (a la Billy Davies) Still 3-0 down on 71 minutes, and the rest is history. What a result, best live game I've seen
Cheers Davy We certainly do live in hope onwards and upwards just hope the lads do themselves justice on Friday.
What about intuition? Growing up I just knew Peter Shilton was a brilliant goalkeeper. When I first saw Nigel Martyn I just knew he was a brilliant goalkeeper. When I first saw Silvestre I just knew he was pony - and so on
Remember it so well pal, second only to the Derby (sorry Chips) comeback for me - was it Bowyer smashed in that glorious winner??
