Carson is rubbish but Paul Robinson is one of the best keepers in the league and should be pushing Joe Hart for England number one.
According to the Lancashire Evening News, Lonergan was training with Everton as part of the Iain Turner loan deal so that Moyes could watch him. West Brom have also been mentioned as in for him, so the guy's obviously rated. Maybe I dismissed him too soon looking at the player of the year achievements and his record aside from last season, though Preston fans seem to be saying he's similar to Schmeichel: stops the shots but big-headed and lacks a controlled all-round game. The Times have apparently floated Kuszczak's name again. He's the guy I want, as I keep prattling on about.
According to today's Sun newspaper....... "Leeds have made ex-Preston keeper Andy Lonergan, 27, their new No.1"
seriously... so we got rid of a goalkeeper that was a very good shot stopper and young for a keeper thats worse?
apparently we are going to announce the signing today as wickersley white said http://www.thefootballnetwork.net/main/s277/st169563.htm
That's what it seems like to me; that he just lost confidence. Maybe a move is exactly what he needs.
You could also say we sold for £1.2-5m a decent shot stopper with little experience who's arrogance got in the way of his relationship with his defenders and made a load of mistakes and brought in a 27 (so still young) year old with over 200 games in the Championship including 2 seasons where he was his club's player of the year who was also monitored by PL clubs, apparently for somewhere between £200k-750k. Sounds like a good deal to me. EDIT: And may I just point out that the 3 PL clubs interested in Lonergan is 3 more than were interested in Kasper. EDIT: This is straight from the Mirror site from late last night: "Leeds are ready to seal a deal for keeper Andy Lonergan after agreeing a £200,000 fee with League One-bound Preston. Lonergan has had a medical and discussed terms at Elland Road and is expected to sign on today as a replacement for Kasper Schmiechel, who has moved to Leicester City. Everton took a long look at Lonergan during the second half of last season - he even went training with them - but the Toffees have not been able to raise the cash or create a squad vacancy for him." And people think we're tight! Everton can't raise £200k?
He doesnt look too bad, the more i hear of it, the better i feel about but i still feel we should be looking for very good keepers and he doesnt strike me to being that bu he may prove me wrong
he's clearly a capable keeper who we'd all have welcomed a year or so ago, but frankly signing someone who has had an apparent confidence crisis and known as shot stopper, rather than a commanding presence, is to me pretty worrying. He couldn't make the side of the only team worse defensively than us last season. It doesn't feel like progress.
I'm the same, the Preston editor on the football rumours site was going on about how he is definitely a Prem quality player. I'm going to give Larry the benefit of the doubt on this one.
I think that was just their bullshitty 'in the know' way of saying Everton didn't think he was good enough. Like I said above, the thing that worries me about Lonergan is his playing style; it worries me that we're just getting another Schmeichel but with even less confidence - not an improvement even if it is to our financial gain.
Evening Leeds fans... Having read through this thread I decided to offer some thoughts on this possible move of Lonners. I say possible as rumour has it that Lonners met with Moyes yesterday morning before going to Leeds (Moyes still lives in the Preston area). I suspect that Everton would like him but as their No2 keeper, and Lonners wants to play first team football. This would mean of course that any move to Leeds would have to be with Lonners as No1 keeper, otherwise he would be better off going to Everton (arguably). It is true that PNE have turned down significant offers for him previously and particularly when son of Satan was manager.. Lonners is Preston born and came through from PNE's junior ranks, he showed a great deal of promise but suffered a broken leg (I think) riding a bike. So he had a very long layoff at an important stage in his development. Having made a full recovery from this set back he proceeded to stake his claim as the No1 keeper. He is a very good keeper and as already mentioned a terrific shot stopper, but does tend to stay on his line. He is still young as keepers go so there is room for him to improve this apparent weakness in his game. He has been players player of the year and deservedly so and you don't get that from your fellow professionals unless you have done your job. DF wrecked the PNE team discipline that had been present under AI and persisted in believing that no matter what the score PNE would score more goals than the opposition, the only time it worked was against Leeds. He was clueless tactically and the person to blame more than any other for PNE's relegation. The defence and Keeper were badly affected by DF's shortcomings and leaked goals like a sieve. Of course the keeper gets most of the flack when this is the case and that is what happened with Lonners and he naturally had a loss of confidence. If he does move to Leeds I feel confident that he will not disappoint and he does need a fresh start at another club. If the fee is £200k as reported he is a gift to Leeds no doubt about it IMHO of course. Hope this is helpful and if he the deal does go through the best of luck to Leeds and to Lonners..
My POV.... he is experienced and he is not a bad keeper... i agree with the comments about Kasper on his day amazing shot stopper...but i never felt safe...i always felt when a cross came in or a free kick curled into the box we were at risk. Lomergan will get my 100% support just as will anyone else who pulls our jersey on..... lets judge him after a few months....as always we are all world class managers on Championship Manager Im sure Westwood was the first choice but this gut is no mug...and for sure he got plenty of practice last season
Well if that's all true, it's a good opportunity for us to show how good Lonergan is and show up dickhead junior to be the massive **** that he is.
He sounds like a good keeper on paper, so everyone should give him chance. He's had a poor season last year, but won 2 player of the years in a row, has been linked with Prem clubs and highly rated by his managers.
