Probably not for the time being. Budget is restricted, so any money paid in transfer fees is going to come out of the salary budget, so unless there are compelling reasons otherwise we're better off looking for out of contract players. Available players are going to be looking for the best money first, so the better players are going to go to the clubs who are offering the best money. When all those clubs have got all their players the remaining out of contract players will start to lower their salary expectations and hopefully at some point down the line there will be players who are on Hessy's list who are prepared to play for what we're prepared to pay them.
With Lee and Whelpdale still not signing for anyone, I still keep hoping that something (a miracle) might just happen. Deluded or what.
This is pathetic Crawley Town can meet the fee for Lee and Whelpdale but we can't, we are so far down the pecking order its embarrassing. No doubt we will trial a few more non league dross in the pre-season. Where have all the Gills fans gone who had such high expectations for next season?
