The Edge, Mr Sound-Effects sent up here hilariously by Bill Bailey...
Just a few points - Zeppelin were one of the all-time great bands. From the 80s onwards there was a collective hope that they'd reform and pick up where they left off but Robert Plant in particular always blocked it. We had the excellent Page & Plant Unplugged in the mid 90s but still no reformation. They were happy to put out various compilations over the years and they were bought by the faithful. In 2007 they announced this concert and the online ticket application for 20,000 tickets. Naturally, it was a quick sell-out. The concert itself was attended by many non-Zep fans, some of whom didn't even like the band but it was a place to be seen and a picture in the papers. Cynically, as it was just before Christmas, they released 'Mothership', yet another greatest hits compilation that was very similar to another released in the 90s called 'Remasters'. Quite simply, yes they're a great band but they take their fans for mugs. This new DVD/CD will be timed for a reason, there's big talk of the band reforming for a tour next year and this is the appetizer, sadly, it's not the real thing, Jimmy Page has spent many months 'cleaning it up' so it's another con you'll pay through the nose for. If you want a good idea of what makes the band tick read 'Hammer of the Gods' a warts and all resume of the band that worships the greenback...
I dont know about anybody else but for me this is the movie of the year. The trailer already gives me goosebumps and i hope the movie comes to my hometown. Nevertheless i will buy blu-ray later. Sooperhoop, sorry to say i dont have your high morale so i dont feel they take me for mugs. I have read that "Hammer of the gods" and noticed from it that JP is a bit money oriented. However he was nice enough when my daughter incidentally met him in bayswater few years ago. He was very polite and willingly accept picture taken with him and my daughter in it. Almost every star in the music business are willingly to earn as much money that they possible could. I just love their music and its all that counts.
Igor, don't let the downers get you down. A music thread is always welcomed, it's been a while and Led Zeppelin is a good band to kick it off again. My fav Zep tune is Achilles last stand, perfect for a prog rocker like me
Prog Rock, now there is something I never got. I would consider myself "into" most types of music from Rock, like Zep to punk, electronic dance, house and all good pop music. Infact I would say i would only turn the radio off if brass bands or prog rock came on. Serious question, what do you like about prog, go on sell me it, I may have missed out.
Prog Rock? Ok, I know the winter nights are long up there in the Arctic Circle but there's a limit to everything. Pull yourself together, man!
Some people have no taste, I like the classics too like Black Sabbath even though they started before my time. Even though Im not a Zep fan, Id rather listen to them than anything thats been in the charts in the last 10 years.
Those long haired hippies from 70's rule the world right now. Hopingly they do it while they listen zep........
I used to say the same until my mate took me to see Hawkwind a few years ago. I've been hooked ever since and see them at least once a year at Xmas. My big thing then and still is dance music. Trance, House, Techno, DnB, Breakbeat...I love it all. And Hawkwind were the true pioneers of dance music, with repetitive beats and weird sounds. For me it's about the whole show, music, visual effects, weird dancing aliens, exotic dancers etc. if you ever see one of their gigs you will know what I mean. Definately in my top 5 of greatest live shows I have ever seen (others being The Specials, Prodigy, Alabama 3 and Orbital) PS. I was only joking Igor, no intention to offend
To be honest, I actually detest "prog rock" and all that it currently is now. I think it's a phony genre. And that's being said with my favourite band of all time being Yes. I consider them to be symphonic rock. I actually listen to a good handful of bands that are considered progressive and experimental but there are a lot of contrived bands out there who try to make progressive music for the sake of it, which is silly. Yes simply made their music because it was what they wanted to make. They didn't allow it to be limited in certain ways. In fact, I don't think "progressive rock" was a term then.
Ok, where shall I start... First, not sure it's possible to sell it, either it's for you or it's not. At least that's the way it worked for me. The band that sold it to me was Dream Theater, who's more Progressive Metal, but they're all the same in the Prog Rock genre. Been to see them seven times over the years and they never let me down. But if you don't like the technical part of music then it's probably not for you, it's normally the "best in the class" that performs this genre. From Wikipedia What intrigues me the most though about progressive rock is what the bands over the years have been able to create and at the same time change music forever. Bands that I listen to like Jethro Tull, The Who, Queen, Pink Floyd, Kansas, Dream Theater, Bush, Led Zeppelin, Elton John, Genesis, David Bowie, Yes, Deep Purple and Journey, they have all done something to develop music and influence other bands. Some of the ones listed are purely prog bands, others are progressive in their writing and the way they create music and for that I greatly admire them. Prog music is still only part of the music I enjoy, the common denominator is that "all" music I like is made before 1997 with the odd exception. Both fair imo
Thank you for bothering, I will take time over the weekend to listen to the links and more. Of the music you listed, I am a big Bowie fan, in the seventies if he released an album of him farting in the bath i'd have bought it, actually I do have Heroes (side 2). Thanks again and you never know, my hair feels longer already.
You can't go wrong with Bowie. Tonight and until Sunday I will have three mates over for music, drinks and Premier League (my wife have already fled the scene ), one of them is a big Bowie fan. And knowing we're all die hard eighties fans it should be a cracker of a weekend. Though Bowie was definitely best in the seventies. Re Dream Theater, it can get a bit pretentious if you're not a fan. But you never know. This is ranked as the 15th best concept album of all time by Classic Rock Magazine, now that was a great concert (2000 or 2001 I think). I'm a massive Zep fan, in fact I've been playing 'Over the hills and far away' at full volume in the car this past 2 weeks. Alternating it with 'Sympathy for the Devil' by the Stones. Drives my kids mad. I was at the Foo Fighters gig at Wembley when a couple of them toddled out to play 'Ramble On'. All great stuff but its alot like the Sex Pistols re-forming, I prefer to remember them in their respective pomp a la this - FWIW spend your hard earned cash on 'When Giants walked the Earth' the Mick Wall book / bio of LZ, great read
Really don't understand this love of "Prog Rock" especially in those who weren't around at the time. For better or worse I was and Rock was over by the start of the seventies. It was all posh boys and endless guitar solos and even worse drum solos and in Rick Wakeman's case whatever expensive keyed instrument he could lay his hands on. Then there was "Folk Rock" with the less than Incredible String band etc. ****ing hell that really was the pits. Why have Hawkwind when you can have George Clinton for the same price? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZc9BAvwKnE
Back in the 70s i had a mate who bought Brain Salad Surgery by ELP. Used to see Prog Rock bands on OGWT but this type of music that did nothing for me and still dont. Still, each to their own.
Go and see Steel Panther and you can see a 10 minute guitar and drum solo played by the same guy, it was awesome. Mind you with the women getting their tits out every 5 mins, Id have probably quite happily listened to anything. Motley crue drum solos are great mainly because the drummer is doing 360s in the air over the audience.
Tommy Lee is really the man im envy of mainly because he has history with PAM Anderson.....I wonder how many times they get 360 over in the bed?????? Seriously , that proge-rock suits me fine time to time. It is music i preferelly listen alone so i can concentrate properly to it. I have found Dream Theater just few years ago and i did saw them in Helsinki couple years ago. Great band and great players. Led Zeppelin suits me every day of the year and whenever i hear "Kashmir's" murdering riff it just get me rockin....... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hAzdgU_kpGo&feature=player_embedded
