After recent discussions on another thread, in regards to teams that were automatically promoted, that occupied the automatic places at this time of season. I decided to try and find those stats, which was a lot easier than I realised.

Now for some slightly bad news...having looked back so far at the previous four seasons, only the maximum of one team occupying the top three places after eleven games was automatically promoted for each season. The team that occupied top spot after eleven games over the previous four seasons did not win the league. In the last two seasons, the team that occupied top spot was NOT automatically promoted, although Bournemouth achieved it has Champions in 2009/10 from being second after eleven games (so maybe watch out for Port Vale).

Now for the good news...Gillingham have the highest points total for top spot over five seasons as follows:

2012/13 - 26 (Gills)
2011/12 - 22
2010/11 - 23
2009/10 - 25 (the earlier mentioned Brentford)
2008/09 - 23

Then before completing this thread I checked 2007/08 when MK Dons won the league with a total of 97 points, they are the only team that I have found so far that occupied top spot after eleven games and they had 25 points and went on to be crowned champions.

2007/08 - 25 (MK Dons)

So following MK Dons and Brentford with one less point than us at this stage, let us hope that is a good omen. Although obviously it is still a very, very long way to go but we can start to believe, or would that just be chancing fate as a Gills supporter!!?
 
Good stuff brb. It's reassuring to see that we have the biggest points haul at this stage from the period you've reviewed. I suspect (and hope) that what differentiates Brentford and MK Dons is not just the points total after 11 games but also the margin over 4th place at this stage.

I was talking to Sy on twitter yesterday and he reminded me, that Carlisle had 26 points at this stage 17 years ago back in 1994/95 when it was Division Three and went on to be crowned Champions.

I think it was me in the other thread brb.

And I think this proves the point I was trying to make.
Promotion is not won in October (although it helps :emoticon-0105-wink: )

It is won in March/April/May.

I will start to believe promotion is a possibility when we are 3pts clear for every game left to go in the season plus 1 :grin:
 
Totally agree with you SirKeefy.

In honesty what got me looking at the stats this weekend along with your prompting of the situation, although I do normally take interest in them during the season. Is that it was my way of showing positively how valuable that point was at Oxford yesterday, as all my stats above demonstrate it was an achievement in itself for such a points total at this very early stage. We can only hope it may continue.
 
I thought my question might excite your statistical gene brb - thanks for doing the extra research. So we know now that we've got as good a total as anyone can remember for the bottom division after 11 games and we've also the biggest safety margin over 4th place in recent seasons. I agree that nothing is won in October, but if we can take 8 or more points from the remaining 4 games this month, it'll be starting to feel like promotion is ours to lose.

Agree totally about it being a point gained yesterday. After the midweek matches we were 6 points clear of 4th and 8 ahead of 8th. By 5pm yesterday those margins had improved to 7 and 9.
 
Cheers for the analysis, it had occurred to me already that the early runner rarely wins the race. Let's hope we can buck the trend. UTG

HI brb. Assuming that formatting was created using HTML, how much code did that require. Just wondering whether to have a go at that myself but I'm not too keen on coding. Hence I always use the snipping tool as in the other version you have attached; but it has its limitations if the report goes over a screen.

Ron - no html code involved mate, I found another way of grabbing the image, through the current functions...

Create data on Excel
Use snipping tool for required capture
Upload subsequent image to not606 (via paperclip)
Preview image in post

*This is where the current technique now changes...

Whilst previewing image, right click and copy url (clever eh! - lol)
Then paste url to your post via the normal functions of insert image (portrait icon on tool bar)
Then preview image again and within the code you will see a number, normally set at 1, change that number in the code to increase size i.e. I changed mine to number 3.
DO NOT delete original paperclip upload. If memory serves me correctly from previously using this function, your url needs to be able to read the image from your original paperclip upload (could be wrong but don't want to risk losing the image).

I hope that all makes sense and it really is a lot easier than it sounds above. One final note, sadly you can only copy & paste within the limitations of the snipping tool, which is screen size. I have not attempted to try as of yet, whether you can upload an entire spreadsheet page without the use of a snipping tool.

ps. my brb prediction league table is all html code. Although to post it to this site, you need the relevant white space remover - I currently have access to two free online versions / and a relevant macro sheet supplied to me by AllHell to create the code (it is adaptable if you understand coding).

I thought it was always "on topic" shouting man. All about indicators after just 10 games.

In the 70's and 80's we were renowned for being 'there or thereabouts until Feb/March time. Then somehow we often seemed to lose our way in the run-in.

IIRC in 77/78 we were very close to the top right up to late February when even a 'fair' run-in would have seen us promoted. But we then won just 2 of the last 16 (1 of the last 11) :sad:

That's an incredible loss of form for a team at the top, and I'm not saying this team will do that. But, having been crushed on that occasion, and similarly in other seasons, I won't let my hopes run away with things until, as i said before, we are over the line.

10 games in is an indication that we have a decent side and I am delighted we look 'possibles' to be up the pointy end come May. Much better than us being 'relegation candidates'. But it is no more than that, just an indication. No one is promoted yet, no one is relegated yet.

If we are still top at Xmas time, I might start to dare to dream tho' :emoticon-0102-bigsm

And yes, alwaysright, I was searching out similar grumpy old men like myself :emoticon-0105-wink:
