15th April update; Yesterday's defeat to Scunthorpe United was the worst possible outcome, no positives can be taken from it at all. We cannot even claim to have been unlucky. Amos aside we were awful and the visitors deserved to win. Of all the games we still had to play the two we really could not afford to lose were the "6 pointers" against Scunthorpe and Portsmouth, our play-off rivals. Even a draw against Scunthorpe would have been much better as it would have denied them two vital points. I'm afraid Charlton's chances of finishing in 6th place have now passed beyond realistic possibility and into the realm of mathematics. We probably need to win all four of our remaining games, or at the very least win three and draw one. Bearing in mind who we have to play and the performances we have put in against Bristol Rovers, AFC Wimbledon and Scunthorpe, gaining 12 or 10 more points now seems impossible. All we can do now is see what happens on Tuesday evening at Shrewsbury, and (those of us who have not already given up all hope) hope for a minor miracle and helpful results from other games.
17th April update; Massive win tonight away at Shrewsbury, we are right back in the play-off mix. But we must go one step further and beat Portsmouth on Saturday. Or at the very least avoid a defeat. The chance to extend our season and maybe get to Wembley is still alive, thanks to Lee Bowyer and his men tonight.
It looks like a mini league of 2 from 3 now. Charlton, Scunthorpe and Plymouth We have the worst goal difference of the three, and the other two have games in hand. Scunthorpe have to play Plymouth. It’s hard to escape the feeling we are going to need to win all of our final 3 games to make it. That home defeat to Scunthorpe last week could be so costly
Whatever happens in our last 3 games, I don't expect another capitulation in any of them. Against Scunny Zero and KaiKai were subbed after about 50 minutes, and didn't feature against the Shrews. Presumably Bowyer told them at H/T to buck their ideas up, and when they didn't he took swift action. The message is clear, less than 100% will not be tolerated, no-one is an automatic choice. Proper Charlton.
Funnily enough, my “Charlton radar” senses the player’s arses could go at Portsmouth. We will either keep it tight and grind out a 1-0 or the players will capitulate in what is bound to be a raucous atmosphere.
If we fail to get promoted we will have spent as much time in L1 as in the Championship since Curbs left. If Roland doesn't sell you can predict which way the scales will fall in the future.
Our last two owners sold the Club (because they had to) due to the threat of Administration.... the Belgian has enough money that this option is off the table.... he will hang on until somebody bangs it into his thick nut that selling will cut his losses OR when he dies and his family want rid! A sale this summer is now down to 50/50 in my eyes
Big game in our part of the league tonight. Blackburn v Peterborough. Posh are still a threat, so we could do with a home win.
You never really know whether or not Roland's thought processes are rational. You don't achieve the success he's had in business by following madcap harebrained schemes and sticking with them when everyone else can see they've failed, yet that is what he's doing at Charlton. If he puts on the logical thinking cap which has served him well in his other ventures he'll realise he must sell now while there is an offer (or two) on the table. If he puts on his I-Roland-don't-do-failure cap he'll hang on till someone realises that he's right and everyone else is wrong about the value. And since he keeps his thoughts secret, who knows?
Unless Plymouth completely bottle it, they should finish 5th. That leaves 4 teams in with a realistic chance of the final play off place - us, Scunny, Pompey & Peterborough. Surely the two key games are Portsmouth v Charlton Scunthorpe v Plymouth @lardiman might have some thoughts. I did a poll on Twitter and the majority of our fans think we are going to bottle it
