To be honest if were offered getting to the League Cup final but getting knocked out of the FA Cup at the 3rd round I would take it. A trip to Wembley is a trip to Wembley. I don't remember anyone complaining about the lack of prestige to the JPT!
I was at The Dell when Newport won the Hampshire Cup. One of those days you remember...we drove back on a double decker bus with the cup strapped into the luggage rack. The driver couldn't find the Dell so I stood on the front deck and directed him....then as we all jumped off he asked me where to park...no idea I said and scooted.
What year? I was bombed from the team one year and didn't even make the bench. I put on an exceptional goalkeeping display at half time with the subs though! Played at the Dell in that final for Havant.
I enjoyed the second League 1 season but mainly because we were the big boys and I knew we were going places. Never felt small time or ashamed...just a good side, hit by misfortune.
Glad to hear it...you look up players stats on the OS and there is just a silhouette of a player...strangely with the same weird quiff.
That's the year. One nil win. Fearon with the winner. I was gutted. Turned up and the team was announced before the game and I was dropped having scored the second in a 2-0 win against Aldershot in the semi final at Eastleigh. We were rubbish and Tony Mount (manager) turned to me and said "I should have had you on the bench tonight".... I was sooooooooooo disappointed as it would have been my last game for Newport before moving up North!
Newport were a good team then...spent money the others didn't have on wages for good players, but with travelling costs etc the team eventually ran out of steam. I watched them in their last good year when they were promoted to the Beezer Premier League...great season. After that I couldn't spare the time to support two teams (and Saints naturally won), so I missed their decline thankfully. Great 5 years or so.
Yes, good times. I was there only for one and a half seasons, joining from Havant. The two cup games against Aldershot were great. We beat them in the FA Cup at home and then beat them in the Hampshire Cup semi final that year also.. they always took loads of supporters which made for a cracking atmosphere, although I seem to recall some trouble at the home game.
They were the only team in the League to apply for promotion last season, but they had to finish top three to get it and didn't. Don't know if they will apply again, particularly as Sholing and Winchester just voluntarily relegated themselves down and have probably got first and second tied up.
Ooh wait, this draw is just about to start. Someone put who we get on here, I think streaming it is just too anorak really.
