Sorry to be logical but to ensure a decent crowd, would it not make sense for it to be the FIRST game of the season?
Even on Sat 3rd rather than a meaningless friendly?
 
Surely that would only further devalue the first round of the cup, as clubs would treat it more like a pre-season friendly and send out a group of reserves/youngsters, and only play a handful of first team players.

I was looking more as it'll be a good chance to see new signings/ before the apathy kicks in which it seems like it has with you!
 
I’m sure they did that one year. Maybe when we were in the Prem so weren’t part of it.

All ties are live on the fancy new Sky Sports+ anyway. Might tune in for Lincoln v Harrogate so they can say someone has.
